Medical Assistant, Full Time

Summary of Responsibilities: To greet patients in a professional, courteous manner and obtain and document pertinent medical and ophthalmic patient history on the appropriate forms.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provide optimum assurance of a safe surgical environment. Check preoperative and PACU areas, materials and equipment for appropriate patient care.
  • Ensure a clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety, explosive hazards and aseptic techniques.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of office supplies and other materials to allow staff to complete assigned responsibilities and provide for patient needs by submitting approved purchase requisitions.
  • Assist in control of traffic and personnel to ensure proper control of infection and asepsis.
  • Transport patients for discharge.
  • Discontinue IV catheter as directed by nurse.
  • Assist in efficient turnover by performing patient care responsibilities in a timely, efficient manner.
  • Clean stretchers according to infection control policy.
  • Respect and understand the patient’s right to treatment and involvement in treatment decisions.
  • Obtain vital signs for preoperative and postoperative phase.
  • Participate in staff education programs.
  • Participate in Surgery Center quality improvement activities.
  • Do not engage in gossip or other non‑productive behavior as outlined in Employee policies.
Required Skills
  • Ability to create a trustworthy and comfortable environment for patients.
  • Ability to obtain patient blood glucose as directed by nurse (CLIA competency).
  • Ability to administer eye drops as directed by surgeon.
  • Ability to obtain intraocular pressure using Icare.
  • Competency for cleaning, disinfecting and storage of lenses.
  • Ability to communicate in a calm, orderly, and non‑threatening manner.
  • Ability to work with interruptions and to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to speak, understand and write fluent English.
  • Assist other staff as needed and attend required meetings.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Empathetic with patients’ needs and concerns.
  • Well organized with attention to detail.
  • Treat patients with respect.
Minimum Education Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Medical Assistant Certification preferred.
Minimum Background Requirements

One year of experience working with electronic medical/health records.

  • One year of experience working in healthcare as a Medical Assistant or related area in physician practice or hospital.
