Overview

Title: Firefighter EMT - Adv/Int

Department/Division: Fire Department / Public Safety
Status: Regular Full time, Non-exempt Employee
Pay: $14.55 - $16.05 per hour (DOQ)
Schedule: 48 on duty / 96 off duty
Reports to: Shift Captain

As a State Park, Jekyll Island is a coastal haven where nature and humans peacefully co-exist.

Summary

Duties include but are not limited to: the daily inspection, maintenance, and cleanliness of vehicles, equipment, and station. Performs all forms of emergency services, including fire, basic and advanced life support, hazardous material, rescue, and public education events as directed. Requires daily contact with the public requiring tact and courtesy. Making instantaneous decisions on emergencies requires mature judgment and knowledge. Attends mandatory training both on and off duty to maintain skills and learn new information.

Also, performs tasks and duties as directed by the Shift Captain.

Responsibilities
  • Provides advanced emergency medical care to sick or injured persons, including basic cardiac life support, basic trauma life support, pediatric care, obstetrical care, advanced airway management, or drug treatments.
  • Responds to and participates in firefighting operations.
  • Inspects buildings for pre-fire plans, fire hazards, and compliance with fire prevention ordinances.
  • Maintains cleanliness of vehicles, inside and out; station cleanliness.
  • Performs daily inspections of all supplies, equipment, vehicles, and station; ensures readiness and completes repairs or replacement as needed.
  • Responsible for accurately completing all required Jekyll Island Authority and Jekyll Island Fire Department reports within required time frames.
  • May be required to work during a State of Emergency as a Critical Workforce member.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED accepted by the Georgia Firefighter Standards & Training Council.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Georgia residents must have a valid driver’s license in one of classes A, B, E, or F within 60 days of employment; out-of-state residents must have equivalent license classifications.
  • Must maintain a current Georgia Emergency Medical Technician - Advanced or Intermediate Certification.
  • Must maintain a Georgia Firefighter Certification; recertification/reciprocity due to lapse must be completed within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Knowledge of standard emergency management principles, hazardous materials, response areas, and the National Incident Command System.
  • Skilled in operation and maintenance of emergency equipment (SCBA, extrication, etc.) and in emergency medical techniques (CPR, first aid).
  • Strong mathematical, communication, and computer skills (Outlook; Android-based tablet software as applicable).
Physical Requirements
  • Must pass and maintain the Georgia Certified Firefighters Physical Agility Test.
Working Conditions
  • Indoor duty in a controlled environment; may be exposed to extreme temperatures, humidity, noise, hazardous materials, chemicals, fire, infectious diseases, and burns during emergencies.
  • Exposure to exhaust, smoke, dust, and gases during emergencies.
  • Work on various surfaces and terrains; may be required to climb, navigate stairs, ladders, and uneven surfaces.
  • Work may occur at any time of day or night; may require overtime or call-back; reasonable cellular contact needed.
