GIS Specialist
The GIS Specialist position is located within the Cobb County Department of Transportation's Traffic Engineering Division. The purpose of this classification is to compile, organize, input, verify, and report spatial information, as well as maintain data layers in the geographic information system (GIS) for use by the Division.
Responsibilities- Compose and produce presentation-quality maps and plots: analyze, integrate and display different kinds of geographic data using GIS system; determine the details of the map to be shown; consult with users to identify needs; design cartographic appearance including size, scale, legend and map elements; and identify the most current data to use.
- Analyze routine geographic data: query databases for analytical information; conduct analysis of datasets; produce digital statistics; conduct research of maps, legal/court records, computer databases, Internet sites, hardcopy materials, or other sources as needed; collect and organize data for report generation.
- Perform mapping functions: graphic editing, line cleaning, topology building, and database updating; convert datasets from other formats; convert map data to digital format using GIS software; digitize hardcopy materials and information; ensure individual map sheets are accurately attached and linked to the system; process GIS data for maps; and perform accuracy checks and quality control tasks to help ensure the integrity of the system, datasets, and maps.
- Maintain geospatial database: collect data from filed notes, maps, legal/court records, computer databases, property surveys, hardcopy materials, record drawings, GPS, or other sources; verify and update information; convert datasets from other formats; clean up and manipulate files and data as necessary; and produce various reports and plans.
- Provide assistance in support of the design, update, and maintenance of departmental GIS data sets; utilize industry-standard notation and tools for database design, presentation, and schema updates.
- Provide customer service: receive and respond to requests for data and information; conduct research required to answer customer questions; provide maps or data to customers; track customer interaction; and coordinate with other local government representatives for data exchange and problem resolution.
- Collect data for projects using GPS, imagery, or other methods; verify and update information; identify relevant available data sources.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required, supplemented by vocational or technical training in Geographic Information Science or related field.
- Supplemented by one year of experience in GIS data maintenance or related field.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental FactorsEssential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
Physical RequirementsTasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
