The purpose of this classification is to lead a crew of workers engaged in operating equipment and performing maintenance and repair work on County roadways and other infrastructure as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Senior Crew Leaders are assigned to lead the most complex projects and may assume temporary lead over multiple crews.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate daily work activities; organize and prioritize project tasks; make work assignments, evaluate performance, and monitor the status of work.
  • Act as supervisor in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Monitor the work environment and safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and others; initiate corrective actions; set up work‑safety zones, traffic control, flagging, cones, barricades, and road/warning signs; enforce safety compliance.
  • Monitor traffic conditions surrounding trucks and equipment; identify obstacles, pedestrians, or unsafe traffic conditions; report incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.
  • Lead and participate in street, roadway, and drainage projects: build concrete forms for sidewalks and curbing; pour and finish concrete; install and remove sidewalks, curbs, driveways, and gutters; shoot grade for concrete; clean, maintain, and repair drains; construct and repair drain boxes, inlets, and manholes; install drain pipes; repair concrete pipes; repair, maintain, and clean ditches; lay and smooth asphalt; repair asphalt and concrete;

    patch or repair potholes and sinkholes; grade work sites; pack ground materials; install street signs and stop signs; install reflective markers; paint road markings; build, repair, and paint street barricades; maintain street signal lights; and remove debris from vehicle‑accident sites.
  • Lead and participate in grounds maintenance or roadside maintenance projects: mow grass; edge buildings, roadways, landscaped areas, driveways, and sidewalks; plant and maintain trees, shrubs, and flowers; cut down trees; prune tree limbs, hedges, and shrubs; pick up and dispose of tree limbs, brush, and other materials; spread pine straw, mulch, sand, gravel, or other grounds materials; lay sod or spread grass seed;

    apply fertilizer, pesticide, herbicide, salt, and sand; rake ground materials; blow leaves/debris from walkways or grounds; pick up and dispose of debris/litter; empty trash containers; dig holes/trenches; and shovel materials.
  • Lead and participate in building maintenance projects: clean buildings, restrooms, or other facilities; mop, sweep, strip, wax, and buff floor surfaces; troubleshoot plumbing problems and clear stopped drains; troubleshoot basic electrical problems; replace batteries, light bulbs, and ballasts; paint interior or exterior surfaces and equipment; repair roofing; install tile flooring; perform concrete and asphalt work; and pressure wash building surfaces and concrete areas.
  • Lead and participate in the installation and maintenance of signs and road markings: set up work zones to protect installers from traffic; check for legibility and reflectiveness; clean and/or repair signs; straighten or replace signposts; put cap on sign post and apply sign with punch, hammer, and rivets; drive anchors into ground with mechanical impact hammer; install sign post into anchor;

    lay out markings described in blueprints; apply markings using thermoplastic, paint, or other material; check existing markings for visibility; and repaint or reapply markings as needed.
  • Lead and participate in work for special events: place or change seasonal flags, banners, holiday decorations, and event banners; design and fabricate custom signs for internal and external customers; paint designated areas in parking lots and recreation areas; determine street closures and placement of traffic control devices and warning signs; and set up and maintain street closures and detours.
