Responsibilities
These positions are vital to the daily operations of the Water System and are responsible for handling customer gains and finals, delinquent service orders, high bill complaints, leaks, stopped meters, and pressure and flow problems throughout the County. They also handle after‑hours emergency calls on a weekly rotating basis. These positions are located in the Field Services Division of the Water System.
The schedule for these positions will be as follows:
Day
Shift: Monday – Friday (7:30 am – 4:00 pm)
Night
Shift: Monday – Friday (11:30 am – 8:00 pm)
Day shift requires standby every 22 weeks, and night shift includes shift differential pay.
- Connects and/or disconnects services: turns on water meters for new customers ensuring the meter is free of leaks and obtains a reading; turns off and secures meters for closed accounts, broken pipes, or non‑payment.
- Investigates and resolves customer complaints regarding meters, water leaks, pressure, and high bills: checks meters for water leakage, proper operation, and illegal water taps; pumps water from meter boxes; determines source of leaks; reports leaks to property owner and/or supervisor; repairs or rebuilds water meters; calculates flow rates; and calibrates as needed.
- Performs general repair work: determines changes out boxes, meters, washer and connections; exposes buried meters; replaces broken meter lids; replaces curb stops; installs dressers on broken water lines; verifies status of accounts prior to performing repair work; and maintains all related forms and documentation.
- Repairs water service lines: locates and digs up water service lines to determine the nature of leak; and determines the most effective technique for repairing lines.
- Locates and reads commercial water meters as assigned: descends into vault; pumps water from meter boxes; records meter data and confirms accuracy of readings; downloads and uploads meter data between portable device and computer system for use in billing of accounts; and maintains related documentation.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or GED required; experience reading water meters, routine repair and maintenance of equipment or related field preferred.
Licenses and CertificationsMust possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Physical AbilitiesTasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, with lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling moderately heavy objects (20‑50 pounds) and occasionally heavier objects (up to 100 pounds).
Sensory RequirementsSome tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental FactorsPerformance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, or water hazards.
