These positions are located in the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division.

These positions will work four 10‑hour shifts a week and will be required to be on a scheduled on‑call status. The schedule will be as follows:

Day Shift

Monday – Thursday or Tuesday – Friday (6:30 am – 5:00 pm)

Swing Shift

Monday – Thursday 1:30 pm – 12:00 am

Responsibilities
  • Takes the lead with the more technical aspects of the crew’s work: confers with co‑workers to assist with complex problem situations, provides technical expertise, and assists with training and instructing co‑workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces water and sewer lines and related system components including locating manholes, service connections, valves and other utilities, assisting with the installation of new sewer taps, clearing debris, inspecting and evaluating system condition, diagnosing leaks or blockages, excavating around infrastructure, installing appropriate repair fittings, replacing service lines, performing confined space entries, cleaning manholes and lines, and changing sewer rings and lids on manholes.
  • Travels to site, reads maps, utilizes GPS and GIS maps, enters and updates the department database with location details, maintains documentation, and receives and completes work orders.
  • Gathers tools and equipment needed, picks up and transports materials, cleans and washes equipment, performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs, and notifies supervisor of needed replacements or repairs.
  • Performs related activities such as saw cuts in driveways, sidewalks, curbs, and roads during repair; assists with preparation and restoration of landscape, property, and other areas to pre‑construction conditions; installs sod or applies seed, hay, pine straw, and lime where needed.
  • Operates and maintains utility truck, camera, shovels, sharpshooter, probing rod, jet hose, jackhammer, pipe saw, hand saw, chainsaw, pipe cutters, various hand tools, hatchets, machetes, post‑hole digger, trash pump, hand pump, or other equipment as necessary.
  • Adheres to established safety procedures: monitors work environment and use of safety equipment, flags and directs traffic, places markers, signs and cones around the project or work site to ensure safety of crew and traveling public, and wears personal protective equipment.
  • Inspects and prepares equipment for safe operation, performs light maintenance (checking fluid levels, refueling, refilling lubricants), cleans vehicles, and secures vehicle after use.
  • Provides emergency coverage as directed or required; works on standby status per departmental schedules.
  • May be required to operate bobcat, backhoe‑mounted loader, or similar loaders to load and/or move gravel, dirt, sand, and other materials; utilizes bobcat to clear land or debris.
  • May be required to operate backhoe to perform basic digging, trenching, and clearing of land or materials for maintenance and upkeep projects; controls placement of equipment to avoid damage to utilities.
  • Operates track or rubber‑tired loader with large volume and weight capacities to load materials into trucks or move them over short distances; controls scoop height, angle, and position for optimum delivery; controls weight of materials to avoid exceeding capacity.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by two years of experience in installation, maintenance, and repair of water and or sewer utilities.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Must possess or obtain the following certifications within six months of assignment:
    Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Excavation, and Flagger.
  • Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort with emphasis on climbing and balancing, involving stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling 20–50 pounds (occasionally up to 100 pounds).
