Job Summary

This position performs skilled labor in the maintenance, repair and construction of the City/BLW’s facilities. Work involves a wide range of skilled labor in the following areas: woodworking, welding, sheet metal, drywall, plumbing, electrical and concrete work. Supervises Maintenance Technicians I and II as assigned or in the absence of the Manager, Skilled Trades and Building Maintenance.

Responsibilities
  • Design, plan, and construct new structures and fixtures; repair and replace City/BLW facilities as needed.
  • Perform woodworking tasks, including repair and construction of playground equipment, flooring, shelving, partitions, fencing, tables, benches, and cabinets.
  • Execute concrete work such as building frames, job estimates, and finishing to specifications.
  • Conduct welding and sheet metal work, including ARC, wire feed, gas welding and occasional soldering; fabricate and repair metal items such as truck beds, trailers, gutters, fencing, etc.
  • Install roofing systems (shingles, roof decks, roof metal); perform repair work involving removal and replacement of decking, shingles, and gravel.
  • Repair and replace plumbing with materials such as copper, PVC, galvanized and polybutylene piping.
  • Repair and replace drywall, mixing and finishing drywall.
  • Apply painting to indoor and outdoor surfaces using various types of paint.
  • Apply electrical knowledge, wiring, and systems.
  • Provide supervision and technical expertise to Maintenance Technicians I and II.
  • Interpret and explain blueprints and building plans to work crews; organize labor and materials to complete projects.
  • Recommend independent contractors as necessary and supervise their work for quality control.
  • Deliver materials and heavy equipment to job sites; load and unload as needed.
  • Assist the Manager, Skilled Trades and Building Maintenance in formulating the division budget.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ progressively responsible experience with building trades or 5 years’ experience and a vocational school certification.
  • Experience in woodworking, finish carpentry and related tools.
  • Welding experience; skill in ARC, wire feed, and gas welding.
  • Roofing experience; ability to repair and replace shingle, gravel, rubber, and tar roof systems.
  • Sheet metal fabrication skills for various metal items.
  • Operation of heavy equipment; ability to safely operate tractors, backhoes, dump trucks, and similar equipment.
  • Painting experience with various applications.
  • Concrete work experience; ability to set up forms and pour all types of concrete finishes.
  • Window and door repair and replacement.
  • Swimming pool maintenance and repair.
  • Basic electrical and wiring knowledge.
  • Ability to create job designs and drawings; read, organize, and plan work from job drawings or blueprints.
  • Knowledge and ability to interpret and comply with applicable building codes.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise and organize work crews.
  • Shop mathematics skills.
  • Familiarity with building construction safety practices and procedures.
  • Good physical condition with the ability to lift, pull, push moderate to heavy objects and stand or walk for extended periods; ability to work outside in all weather.
  • Clear physical examination and drug screen results at time of hire.
  • Valid Georgia CDL driver’s license with satisfactory driving history and no DUIs in the last 3 years.
