Building Trades Technician II

Position Information

This position is located within the Cobb County Department of Public Safety, assigned to the Fire Annex at 3200 Austell Road SW, Marietta, GA 30008.

• Perform skilled and highly skilled trades work in the maintenance, repair, and renovation of county buildings and facilities and related mechanical, plumbing, and electrical equipment, ensuring environmentally safe working conditions.
• Design and draw project plans for work to be completed and read blueprints or other design drawings to determine work to be performed.
• Ensure operation, construction, and maintenance of buildings, equipment, and systems comply with applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards, conducting inspections to identify problems and initiate corrective actions.
• Perform building maintenance, renovations, and repair tasks such as flooring, ceiling tiles, fixtures, appliances, painting, carpet, concrete work, plaster, sheetrock replacement, etc.
• Perform rough carpentry: construct wall framing, floor systems, roof decking, and trusses; and finish carpentry and woodworking: cabinets, workstations, ramps, decks, countertops, doors, windows, baseboards, molding.
• Determine materials needed, provide cost projections, gather equipment, tools, parts and supplies, monitor inventory, and order replacements.
• Supervise and instruct inmates, maintenance staff, and contractors; ensure safe operation of trade tools and equipment and adherence to safety standards.
• Perform electrical troubleshooting, installation, replacement of wiring, receptacles, switches, components, breakers, bulbs, and ballasts.
• Perform plumbing troubleshooting, installation, repair and replacement of pumps, mechanical equipment, fixtures, water lines, drains; repair steam lines, toilets, sinks, faucets, fountains; solder pipes and repair leaks.
• Perform general maintenance of heating and air‑conditioning systems: install or repair duct systems, replace filters, troubleshoot issues.
• Communicate, report, and complete work orders with technology such as smartphones or tablets and specialized software.
• Purchase construction and maintenance items; submit related financial paperwork to administrative staff.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• High School Diploma or GED plus vocational or technical training in one or more building trades.
• Three years of experience in building construction, maintenance, and repair.

• Valid Driver’s License.

Tasks require heavy physical effort and endurance, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects (20‑50 lbs; occasionally up to 100 lbs).

Ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades, sounds, tastes, odors, depth, texture, visual cues or signals; ability to communicate orally.

Exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, noise extremes, and electric currents.
