These positions are vital to the daily operations of the Water System and are responsible for handling customer gains and finals, delinquent service orders, high bill complaints, leaks, stopped meters, and pressure and flow problems throughout the County. They also handle after hours emergency calls on a weekly rotating basis. They are located in the Field Services Division of the Water System.
Schedule- Day Shift: Monday – Friday (7:30 am – 4:00 pm). Day shift requires standby every 22 weeks.
- Night Shift: Monday – Friday (11:30 am – 8:00 pm). Night shift includes shift differential pay.
Responsibilities include:
- Connect and/or disconnect services: turn on water meters for new customers ensuring meter is free of leaks and obtaining reading; and turn off and secure meters for closed accounts, broken pipes or non-payment.
- Investigate and resolve customer complaints regarding meters, water leaks, pressure and high bills: check meters for water leakage, proper operation, and illegal water taps; pump water from meter boxes; determine source of leaks; report leaks to property owner and/or supervisor; repair or rebuild water meters; calculate flow rates; and calibrate as needed.
- Perform general repair work: determine changes out boxes, meters, meter washer and connections; expose buried meters; replace broken meter lids; replace curb stops; install dressers on broken water lines; verify status of accounts prior to performing repair work; and maintain all related forms and documentation.
- Repair water service lines: locate and dig up water service lines to determine nature of leak; and determine most effective technique for repairing lines.
- Locate and read commercial water meters as assigned: descend into vault; pump water from meter boxes; record meter data and confirm accuracy of readings; download and upload meter data between portable device and computer system for use in billing of accounts; and maintain related documentation.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or GED required; experience reading water meters, routine repair and maintenance of equipment or related field preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds);
may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental FactorsPerformance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, or water hazards.
