Fire Apparatus Technician

The purpose of this classification is to perform complex maintenance and repair of County-owned fire apparatus to include heavy duty trucks greater than 1-ton, fire engines, fire aerial apparatus, fire tractor drawn aerials and to provide lead guidance and training to less experienced Truck and Equipment Technicians. Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned co-workers, confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities;

organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers; assists with complex situations and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment.

Maintains familiarity with current National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) Standards. These standard include but are not limited to NFPA 1900, 1910, and 1917.

Performs inspections: inspects and tests all truck systems, including drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, high/low voltage electrical system, on board generators, hydraulics, HVAC, fire pumps, emergency lighting, radio systems, ladder racks, aerial apparatus ladders systems, aerial apparatus stabilization systems and emission systems; completes or revises work order for repairs; obtains required parts; inspects and tests completed work;

and updates required records.

Performs routine and complex repairs on trucks, gathers information from apparatus operator reports, fault codes and other diagnostic data; troubleshoots and diagnoses problems; identifies items needing repair; completes required repairs; and ensures operation and performance is within specified limits.

May on occasion travel out-of-state to design, and inspect fire department vehicles, and OEM/ Dealer Level training manufacture specific to fire apparatus, water pumps and aerial systems.

Performs preventive maintenance on trucks, checks and replaces fluids; drains and replaces oil; collects and recovers Freon; changes and replaces filters; lubricates mechanical parts; installs and replaces blades; rotates, mounts and balances tires; replaces tires, belts, and hoses; checks and replaces batteries; greases equipment; flushes radiators; and performs tune-ups or other preventative maintenance activities as assigned.

Rebuilds valves, intake and pressure reliefs, repairs plumbing to valves and discharges, repairs auxiliary cooler systems, services and repairs auxiliary transmissions for apparatus pumps, repair of pump priming systems.

Determines amount of materials required for projects: gathers equipment, parts and supplies; assists in monitoring inventory levels of parts, equipment, tools or supplies; and initiates requests for new or replacement materials.

Operates or uses various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments; and operates and maintains basic mechanics tool kit and/or vehicle-specific maintenance tool sets.

Welds and fabricates parts: welds broken parts; fabricates replacement parts; replaces parts or structures to trucks and heavy equipment; and verifies parts operate according to specifications.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by vocational training and five years as an automobile technician or six years of experience demonstrating progressive skills in the mechanical repair of vehicles. Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with appropriate endorsement or Georgia Class E and F License.

Required to maintain certifications in:
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) T3 Drive Train, T4 Brakes, T5 Steering and Suspension and EVT certification.

Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, unsafe structures, confined spaces, machinery, or electric currents.
