Agency OverviewOhio State Highway Patrol. An internationally accredited agency whose mission is to protect life and property, promote traffic safety and provide professional public safety services with respect, compassion and unbiased professionalism.
Responsibilities- Documents and reports economic violations with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).
- Investigates assigned complaints regarding violation of PUCO rules & regulations.
- Utilizes portable laptop and other computer equipment.
- Makes on‑site recommendations to correct violations.
- Provides assistance where possible.
- Maintains effective public relations with drivers, company representatives, law enforcement officers and others to ensure compliance with state & federal safety.
- Assists other inspectors, troopers & local law enforcement.
- Prepares and delivers presentations and/or training related to highway safety & compliance with state & federal rules.
- Testifies in court regarding violations.

QualificationsOption 1
- Six months experience in enforcing commercial motor vehicle laws or regulations.
- One course or three months experience in public relations.
- Valid driver’s license.
Option 2
- Six months training or six months experience in motor carrier inspection or commercial vehicle maintenance.
- One course or three months experience in public relations.
- Valid driver’s license.
Position‑specific minimum qualifications:
Valid driver’s license required.
Training and development required to remain in this classification includes successful completion of all required in‑service training programs, maintaining annual certification for all North American standard training to conduct inspections of federal regulations (e.g., Level I, hazardous materials, motor coach & cargo tank). Must obtain LEADS certification within six months after employment and re‑certify every two years as mandated by Ohio Administrative Code 4501:2‑10‑03 (C)(4).
UnusualWorking Conditions
Requires travel; may work overtime, nights, weekends & rotating shifts; subject to after‑hours calls in emergencies. Works outdoors exposed to weather, dirt, rust, car fumes, hot engine burns, fast‑moving vehicles, highway noise, hazardous materials and unpredictable behavior from vehicle owners. Conducts inspections in confined spaces.
Background Check Information- BCI and FBI fingerprint check, background check and possibly polygraph examination may be required.
- Comparative analysis and/or drug test may be required.
Position is identified as safety sensitive & is subject to random drug & alcohol testing in accordance with DPS 501.24.
