Position: Medical Assistant, Patient Serv Spec, 40 Hours (Days)

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Practice Manager, the Medical Assistant/Patient Service Specialist functions as a member of the clinical and administrative team, completing daily clinical and administrative operations to ensure smooth day-to-day operations in the physician practice. This role provides medical/nursing support to provider staff in the ambulatory setting, prepares patients, and sees them through the entirety of their visit, while also completing responsibilities of a Patient Service Specialist.

Responsibilities / Duties
  • Rooms patients and prepares them for the provider visit.
  • Records vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, pulse oximetry, weight, height, respiratory rate) and enters them accurately into EMR.
  • Documents patient history, chief complaint, pharmacy information, prescription list, etc. into EMR for the physical exam.
  • Obtains required consents and completes required forms for specific visit types.
  • Performs office testing as needed and performs controls on certain in‑office tests.
  • Performs EKGs as ordered.
  • Chaperones providers as required.
  • Administers vaccines and medications as ordered by provider, following BMC policies.
  • Stocks exam rooms and monitors expiration of supplies.
  • Assists with incoming calls by answering, triaging, and routing telephone calls appropriately.
  • Registers patients in EMR, verifies demographics, and obtains accurate health insurance information.
  • Conducts eligibility checks to ensure insurance is reflected accurately.
  • Schedules patients' appointments and appropriate testing as directed.
  • Follows scheduling rules and directly schedules patient visits in other practices.
  • Performs pre‑visit planning daily for all upcoming scheduled appointments.
  • Performs outreach to select patient groups for patient care and quality, scheduling specialty appointments and testing as required.
  • Informs manager of all clinical or administrative supply needs and assists with ordering.
  • Obtains prior authorizations and/or insurance referrals as per practice need.
  • Performs phlebotomy, including venipuncture and collection of blood specimens for laboratory processing, while adhering to patient identification and safety protocols.
  • Conducts point‑of‑care testing as required and processes laboratory specimens in accordance with guidelines.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes clinical instruments and equipment per infection control standards and maintains documentation for sterilization logs.
  • Maintains safe and accurate venipuncture, specimen handling, and point‑of‑care testing in compliance with clinical policies and infection control standards.
Education

High School Diploma or equivalent. Education from an approved medical assistant program is preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required

Certified Medical Assistant Certification preferred. Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Experience

No prior experience required. One to three years of medical assistant experience preferred. Phlebotomy experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Must be able to work independently with little supervision.

Compensation Range

$17.79 – $25.00 per hour. This range is an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications and may be adjusted based on education, experience, skills, certifications, benefits, and other factors.
