In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the CVICU Clinical Coordinator is an experienced CVICU Registered Nurse who provides specialized direct patient care while serving as the department's primary clinical resource for orientation, preceptorship, mentoring, competency validation, and staff development.
The Clinical Coordinator supports the Associate Nurse Manager and Clinical Nurse Manager in promoting clinical excellence, staff competency, and safe patient care. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.
Job Functions- Provides direct, specialized professional nursing care to cardiothoracic surgery patients, consistently demonstrating advanced clinical knowledge, sound judgment, and adherence to professional standards, hospital policies, and CVICU practices.
- Serves as a clinical resource and role model for CVICU nursing staff, providing guidance and support in the management of complex and critically ill cardiothoracic patients.
- Functions as the precepting coordinator for newly hired and transitioning CVICU nurses, coordinating and providing structured clinical experiences that support successful progression through orientation.
- Develops, coordinates, and evaluates individualized orientation plans in collaboration with the Associate Nurse Manager, Clinical Nurse Manager, cardiothoracic providers, preceptors, educators, and other appropriate resources.
- Provides ongoing coaching, mentoring, and clinical support to new and developing staff, promoting confidence, critical thinking, clinical judgment, and progression toward independent practice.
- Performs and coordinates competency and skills validations for CVICU nursing staff, ensuring clinical competencies are evaluated consistently and in accordance with department and organizational standards.
- Assists with identifying learning needs and educational opportunities for CVICU staff based on orientation performance, competency validation, clinical observations, changes in practice, and identified patient-care needs.
- Provides or facilitates clinical education and skill development related to CVICU-specific practices, including cardiothoracic surgical patient care, hemodynamics, arrhythmia management, ventilator care, temporary epicardial pacing, chest tube management, and other applicable advanced therapies.
- Observes, evaluates, and provides timely feedback regarding clinical performance, communicating strengths, opportunities for improvement, and recommendations for additional education or clinical experiences to the appropriate leadership.
- Assists with maintaining staff competency and readiness for high-risk, low-frequency clinical situations through simulation, hands-on education, case review, demonstration, and other appropriate learning activities.
- Promotes adherence to evidence-based nursing practice, hospital policies, clinical standards, infection prevention practices, and regulatory requirements through role modeling, education, observation, and reinforcement.
- Participates in quality and patient-safety improvement activities by identifying clinical practice opportunities, contributing to improvement initiatives, and helping staff incorporate lessons learned into daily practice.
- Serves as a clinical liaison between bedside nursing staff, cardiothoracic providers, nursing leadership, education resources, and other interdisciplinary team members to promote effective communication and continuity of clinical education and practice.
- Assists with the evaluation and implementation of new equipment, technologies, procedures, and clinical practices by supporting staff education, competency development, and adoption of approved changes.
- Supports a positive learning environment and professional culture by modeling the MHS Standards of Behavior, fostering trust and mutual respect, and encouraging staff to seek assistance, ask questions, and develop professionally.
- Assists nurses in recognizing changes in patient condition and developing appropriate clinical responses, reinforcing assessment, critical thinking, escalation, communication, and appropriate use of available resources.
- Maintains advanced clinical competence and serves as a subject-matter resource in CVICU practice, maintaining required certifications, completing ongoing education, and demonstrating competency in applicable advanced clinical skills.
- Collaborates with the Associate Nurse Manager and Clinical Nurse Manager regarding orientation, competency, staff development, and identified clinical performance concerns, providing objective observations and recommendations while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
- Performs other clinical, educational, competency, and departmental responsibilities as assigned that support safe patient care, staff development, clinical excellence, and the operational needs of the CVICU.
