Position Summary

The Steel Structures Inspector provides technical expertise in welding, steel fabrication, and ship construction. This position is responsible for verifying quality, workmanship, dimensional accuracy, and contract compliance throughout the vessel construction process.

Working under the direction of the Chief Inspector, the Steel Structures Inspector will support the Company’s commitment to safety by following and promoting the shipyard’s safety program and the Company’s safety standards.

The Inspector will work closely with the shipbuilder’s Quality Control department, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the United States Coast Guard (USCG), and other project stakeholders. The role includes witnessing inspections and tests to verify compliance with contract requirements, approved drawings, regulatory standards, and performance expectations.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Steel Structures Inspector will represent the Company in matters related to steel construction for the Government vessel, including panel assembly, block fabrication and erection, welding, dimensional accuracy, and surface preparation.

Key responsibilities include:

• Promote and follow all shipyard and Company safety policies and procedures.
• Maintain clear and professional communication with the inspection team, shipyard personnel, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.
• Work cooperatively with inspectors and subject matter experts to verify workmanship, quality, and contract compliance throughout vessel construction.
• Perform detailed inspections of steel fabrication and welding activities.
• Verify weld quality, dimensional accuracy, material condition, and compliance with approved drawings and contract requirements.
• Review and interpret production drawings, specifications, vendor information, and material certificates.
• Verify that approved design changes are properly incorporated into vessel construction.
• Assist in identifying and resolving technical, fabrication, and quality issues.
• Participate in the execution of the project’s Test and Inspection Plan.
• Recommend practical strategies for efficient and effective production oversight.
• Coordinate and cooperate with ABS, USCG, and other regulatory representatives.
• Attend key inspections and tests involving vessel construction, erection, systems, equipment, and performance.
• Monitor the shipbuilder’s progress against the approved construction schedule.
• Provide regular progress and inspection updates to the Chief Inspector.
• Prepare and maintain accurate inspection reports, records, photographs, and supporting documentation.
• Document inspection findings, deficiencies, corrective actions, and final outcomes.
• Prepare for inspections by reviewing applicable drawings, specifications, regulations, vendor data, and material certifications.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Chief Inspector or Company management.

Minimum Qualifications

• At least five years of related experience in new-construction shipbuilding.
• Strong knowledge of shipbuilding practices, steel fabrication, welding techniques, production methods, and construction planning.
• Recent experience working with or alongside the USCG and/or a major marine classification society.
• Ability to read and interpret ship construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
• Strong knowledge of welding inspection and steel fabrication requirements.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with shipyard personnel, inspectors, engineers, regulatory agencies, and project management.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
• Strong organizational and documentation skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple inspection priorities.

Education

A high school diploma or GED is required.

A bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Welding Engineering, or another related field is preferred.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

• Must be able to access all assigned work locations, including government shipyards, private shipyards, dry docks, fabrication facilities, and vessels under construction or repair.
