Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic
Serves as the Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic in the Maintenance and Operations (M&O) section within the Engineering Services, at the Marion Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion, Illinois. This facility includes Medical and Surgical clinics, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Operating Room (OR), and Community Living Center (CLC) services. In addition to the hospital itself, support services are provided to Evansville Health Care Center (EHCC) and Community Based Outpatient Center (CBOC's) as well as Veterans Centers.
The primary purpose of this position is to accomplish equipment replacement, maintenance, repair, and operations for the entire Boiler Plant and steam piping system.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Installs, maintains, and repairs a variety of complex equipment and systems involving power boilers with complicated components, critical requirements, and rigid tolerances
- Repairs, troubleshoots, and maintains single-and-multiple fuel power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment such as water treatment systems, chemical dispensers
- Monitors and tests the operation of power boiler systems to identify malfunctions and potential problems with equipment such as automatic controls, valves, piping, pumps, and related components
- Responsible for repairing, operating, and maintaining steam fire tube boilers operating on dual fuel fired boilers, which use oil as a standby energy source and all associated equipment such as burners with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for combustion air, electronic combustion control systems, centrifugal feed water pumps with VFDs, drum level controls, steam transmitters, de-aerating tank, water softeners and condensate storage tanks
- Equipment Maintenance (30%) Performs preventative and scheduled maintenance on plant systems and equipment including boiler feed pumps, fuel oil pumps, air compressors, generators, boiler fixtures, and combustion fans
- Balances, aligns, and maintains pumps, generators, compressors, and maintain equipment and preheaters
- Repairs or replaces flame gauges, controls, relief valves, and ignition devices
- Troubleshoots electrical and pneumatic controls. Adjusts and performs limited diagnostic checks on electronic control devices to determine sources of malfunctions of power boilers
- Ensures all OSHA, EPA safety rules, and Veterans Administration safety regulations are followed
- Performs other related duties as assigned
