ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ENGINEER I (UMP)

Marion, IL, 62959.
Work Hours:
8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Water, is seeking an Environmental Protection Engineer I to support the Public Water Supplies, Field Operations Section. The role involves assisting with design, construction, maintenance, and inspection of public water supply systems.
Essential Functions- Assist higher‑level staff with routine engineering evaluations of public water supplies.
- Investigate and evaluate routine citizen complaints regarding public water supplies.
- Respond to public water supply emergencies.
- Provide routine assistance and guidance to officials and consultants on operational issues and water quality improvement.
- Collaborate with Region FOS Manager, CAS, and Agency Division of Legal Counsel on enforcement priorities.
- Attend and observe meetings with local officials and site representatives.
- Perform other duties reasonably within the scope of duties.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering science, with coursework in environmental, civil, or related specialties.
- Knowledge of environmental, sanitary, hydraulic, hydrology, or related engineering fields.
- Upward Mobility Program credential.
- Effective oral communication with municipal officials, facility operators, and plant managers.
- Clear written reports, organizational, and decision‑making skills.
- Knowledge of public water treatment facilities and related techniques.
- Experience with sanitary survey processes under the Safe Drinking Water Act and state regulations.
- OSA 29 CFR : must complete and maintain OSHA training and HAZWOPER certification.
- Valid driver’s license, travel, background check, and availability for overtime.
- Must use agency‑issued cell phone.
Anticipated starting salary: $6,540/month (effective 7/1/26). Full range $6,540 – $7,480/month. 37.5‑hour work week, pension and retirement benefits, tuition reimbursement, medical/dental/vision/life insurance.
