Summary
This position functions as a Painter in the Maintenance and Operations Section of Engineering Service at the Marion-IL VA Health Care System.

- Knowledge of independent judgment in determining work sequence, selection and use of trade tools, and techniques to provide technical assistance to other trades.
- Knowledge of mixing and selecting paint to comply with color match, texture, and decorative scheme throughout the Medical Center.
- Knowledge of coating materials, methods, devices, and proper techniques to achieve various finish results on various surfaces.
- Knowledge of drywall installation, patching holes, preparing surface to achieve a smooth wall surface.
- Knowledge of building trade practice to identify, repair, replace worn or damaged material, modify, and lay out new work.
- Ability to read and interpret instruction manuals, drawings, and blueprints.
- Must be able to measure and lay out new work.
- Must have skills to ensure proper use of power tools such as radial, table, miter, and circular power saws; hand saws; power planes, power sanders, and electric drills.
Screen-out element:
Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen-out element which usually appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire. Those who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.
The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:
Construction-Structure Dexterity and Safety, Interpret Instructions-Specifications (other than blueprint reading), Materials Technical Practices, Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can be credited toward qualification.
Duties- Prepare, coat, and re-coat interior and exterior surfaces such as wood, concrete, wallboard, metal, and plaster in various areas of the building and grounds.
- Determine the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited to the surface finish required and to obtain proper adhesion and finished appearance.
- Prepare painting materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing in various additives.
- Prepare surfaces by smoothing with sandpaper, filing, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins, and mixing and applying precoating agents.
- Ensure that all tools and equipment are properly functioning and are safe for use.
- Erect or suspend scaffolding in the performance of their duties and is responsible for the proper care and maintenance of their tools and equipment.
- Work Schedule:
Monday-Friday – 1:00 pm to 9:30 pm.
