Summary
The VA Northern Indiana Healthcare System is one of the leading health care systems serving Veterans in the Veterans Integrated Service Network 10 (VISN 10) – which includes medical centers and clinics in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Kentucky. NICHS serves 8 locations: facilities include 2 hospitals – Fort Wayne VA Medical Center and Marion VA Medical Center – and 6 community‑based outpatient clinics in Fort Wayne, Defiance, Huntington, Mishawaka, Muncie, and Peru.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements (if applicable) outlined in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
BasicRequirements
- United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
- Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course was completed.
- Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
- Residency training: physicians must have completed an accredited core specialty training program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Approved residencies include:
- ACGME‑approved programs.
- AOA‑approved programs.
- Other residencies (non‑US training followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) deemed to provide appropriate professional training by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
- Resident and fellow physicians currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA‑accredited residency programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs).
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not training licenses) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Preferred experience:

- Serve as a staff geriatric physician and provide acute evaluation and care for inpatients and outpatients with geriatric conditions across inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Perform all services required in the practice of inpatient (consult) geriatrics.
- Provide care at the outpatient geriatric consultation clinic and supervise resident and fellow trainees in those settings.
- Plan and conduct monthly section meetings with geriatric staff physicians and affiliated staff.
- Attend required section chief meetings with the Chief of PM&RS; monitor overall performance of all geriatric staff physicians/NPs/PAs in the Geri PACT, geriatric consultation clinic, and GRACE; provide performance‑improvement opportunities and interventions as appropriate.
- Conduct FPPE/OPPEs and ensure the Provider Activity Report (PAR) tool reflects appropriate data.
- Collaborate with the Chief of PM&RS to ensure adequate staffing levels and recruit well‑qualified staff.
- Maintain an up‑to‑date schedule to provide coverage in the geriatric clinics and inpatient consult service; oversee quality of medical care delivered to patients.
