Job DescriptionPosition Title: Instructional Educational Assistant FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Responsible to: Building Principal and Classroom Teacher Supervises: Students
Evaluated By: Building Principal w/input of Classroom Teacher Benefit Level: A
Terms of Employment: 180 days (same as students);
Special Education and Head Start - days may vary depending on program calendar
Evaluation Period:
- Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per MCS Performance and Assessment procedures
- Annual summative evaluation prior to May 30
Purpose of the Position: Assist in the education of students.
Classified as Confidential Employee: Functional responsibilities or knowledge in connections with the issues involved in dealings between the school corporation and its employees require strict adherence to confidentiality.
Minimum Requirements- Successful completion of 48 hours of college credit or Para Professional Test
- Meet particular requirements of local, state, and federal programs, especially in terms of confidentiality.
- Successful completion of Crisis Prevention/De-escalation and restraint training
- Relate well with children and parents, treating all children, parents, and staff with dignity and respect.
- Assist teacher in any way possible.
- Assist in maintaining a positive learning environment in the classroom.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher in a resource, separate or general education setting.
- Assist students with academic & behavioral deficit skills as determined by the instructional leader.
- Maintain documentation & records as determined by the principal, teacher of record
- Relate to students in a non-confrontational manner while maintaining established standards of behavior as determined by the instructional leader.
- Assist teachers in implementing an individualized education program for each student including accommodations and modifications.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow guidelines of Article &, FERPA or HIPPA in relation to student information.
- Complete other duties as assigned by TOR, principal or Department of Special Services as part of a student’s IEP.
- Prepare instructional materials as needed.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Superintendent.
- Supervise students in the hall, classroom, or restroom in teacher absence.

- Applicable software and applications (Microsoft Word, iPod/iPad Apps)

- Plan, organize, and schedule priorities.
- Use independent judgment and initiative in making sound decisions and in developing solutions to problems.
- Discreetly handle confidential and politically sensitive matters.
- Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Tactfully and courteously respond to requests and inquiries/complaints from the general public and staff.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community
- Assist students with classroom work as required by the IEP.
- Take responsibility and perform responsible and difficult work assisting students with behavioral or learning goals.
- Utilize applicable software applications (Read 180, Apangea, NEO, Microsoft Office).

- Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.

- Must be able to lift items associated with being a Special Education Educational Assistant, including possible lifting of students.
