Job Description
Position Title:
Dean of Students/Head Varsity Basketball Coach FLSA Status:
Exempt
Responsible to:
Marion High School Principal and Athletic Director
Supervises:
Students, basketball coaches and assistant basketball coaches (High School & Middle Schools)
Evaluated by:
Athletic Director and Marion High School Principal Benefit Level: C
Terms of Employment: 203
Evaluation Period:
* Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per MCS Performance and Assessment procedures
* Annual summative evaluation prior to July 1
Purpose of the Position:
Provide assistance and support to the administration regarding student conduct, parent and community contact, and student attendance issues.
Classified as Confidential Employee:
Functional responsibilities or knowledge in connection with the issues involved in dealings between the school corporation and its employees require strict adherence to confidentiality.
Minimum Requirements:
The following qualifications represent the minimum requirements necessary for an individual to perform this position effectively.
* Bachelor Degree in appropriate area
* Strong organizational and leadership skills
* Prior successful coaching experience
* Ability to collaborate with other head coaches to promote multi-sport student-athletes
Essential Functions of the Position:
The following functions have been determined by Marion Community Schools to be essential to the successful performance of this position.
* Complete administrative duties as assigned by the MHS Principal.
* Assist with each section of lunchroom supervision, morning hallway supervision beginning at 8:00 a.m., and hallway supervision between each class period.
* Represent the administration during conferences with counselors, pupils, parents, and teachers.
* Represent the administration in 504 and special education conferences.
* Meet with relevant staff members to provide assistance regarding student-related concerns (academic, attendance).
* Lead parent conferences when appropriate.
* Assist the athletic department on special projects as needed.
* Perform classroom supervision as needed.
* Work with Student Athletes in the classroom in the areas of academic progress, social maturity, and character development.
* Identify and track at-risk freshman students; work with at risk freshman students and parents to improve academic achievement and reduce drop-out rates.
* Develop and present character education lessons at Marion High School.
* Supervise evening school events in fall and spring as assigned by the MHS Principal and Athletic Director
* Serve as expulsion examiner
* Perform other duties as assigned by the MHS Principal.
Secondary Functions of the Position:
The following functions, while important and necessary to the position, have been determined by Marion Community Schools to be marginal to the successful performance of this position.
* Conduct, coordinate and supervise the basketball program at Marion High School.
* Evaluate player personnel at all levels.
* Supervise and coordinate media and public relations for the basketball program.
* Monitor and assist in the student-athlete's academic progress.
* Assist student-athletes in their pursuit of higher education.
* Assist the Athletic Director in interviewing, evaluating, recommending and hiring of coaches, grades 7-12.
* Coordinate meetings and in-service trainings for all coaches, grades 7-12.
* Assist all coaches, grades 7-12, in planning practice sessions.
* Coordinate observations of middle school events by High School coaching staff.
* Develop and implement appropriate summer camps and training programs.
* Develop, implement and communicate criteria for earning awards.
* Perform other duties and responsibilities as directed by MHS Principal and the superintendent.
Additional Functions:
* Maintain and care for all inventory, including: uniforms, and all athletic equipment.
* Be responsible for care and supervision of locker rooms before and after all practices and events.
Knowledge of:
* Procedures associated with being a basketball coach
* IHSAA Rules and Regulations
* Policies, procedures and functions of Marion Community Schools Board of Trustees
* Applicable software and applications
Ability to:
* Collaborate with other head coaches to promote multi-sport student-athletes
* Plan, organize, and schedule priorities
* Use independent judgment and initiative in making sound decisions and in developing solutions to problems
* Discreetly handle confidential and politically sensitive matters
* Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures
* Tactfully and courteously respond to requests and inquiries/complaints from the general public and staff
* Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community
