Position: Dietitian (Clinical)

Overview

Summary This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS job announcement and will remain open until 4/30/2026 or until all positions are filled. This position is eligible for Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. The 2-page Resume requirement does not apply to this occupational series.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement 04/30/2026.

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship (citizenship requirements; non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7407(a))
  • Registration
  • All applicants must hold the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Exceptions:
    Non-credentialed Dietitians who meet basic requirements may be given a temporary full-time appointment not to exceed one year under 38 U.S.C. 7405(c)(2) and must meet additional requirements (education and supervised practice) to be eligible for the CDR exam
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited college/university or foreign equivalent; completion of an ACEND-accredited supervised practice and verification from the program director that they are eligible to take the CDR exam
  • Foreign education:
    Degrees earned outside the U.S. must be evaluated by ACEND and meet its International Dietitian Education standards
  • Non-credentialed Dietitians may be appointed at GS-07 or GS-09 and may not be promoted/converted until they obtain the RDN credential
  • English Language Proficiency:
    Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Grandfathering provision: VHA employees in this occupation (permanent placement effective Oct 14, 2022) are considered to have met qualification requirements where applicable
  • GRADE DETERMINATION GS-9:
    One year of experience at the next lower grade or education (Master’s degree in nutrition from a regionally accredited university or related field); demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) including knowledge of accrediting and regulatory requirements, virtual technology for nutrition care, ability to deliver nutrition care using the NCP (assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation), application of evidence-based nutrition practices, development of patient-centered goals, data collection for performance improvement, and collaboration with stakeholders
  • GRADE DETERMINATION GS-11:
    One year of experience as an RDN equivalent to the next lower grade, plus KSAs including delivering patient care using the NCP, interpreting research to apply evidence-based practices, developing patient-centered goals, analyzing data for performance improvement, collaborating with stakeholders, compliance with accrediting/regulatory standards

Duties
  • This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed represent the full performance level at GS-11.
  • At lower grades, duties are more limited and with less independence; you will progressively acquire the background to perform at GS-11.
  • Promotion is at supervisor discretion and contingent on performance, availability of higher-level work, and funds.
  • Conducts comprehensive nutrition assessments using the Nutritional Care Process (NCP), including nutrition-focused physical examinations, to establish a nutrition diagnosis and determine risk or malnutrition degree.
