Job Summary

This position is responsible for the delivery of various customer facing services within the revenue cycle. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, scheduling, registration, insurance verification, prior-authorizations, financial counseling/individual solutions, cashiering and customer service. Position adheres to departmental productivity, quality, and service standards in support of operational goals.

Scheduling responsibilities include answering and making calls for scheduling, rescheduling, pending, and canceling patient appointments as required. This position will answer patient's questions regarding basic medical tests and procedures and providing instructions to patients to ensure they are prepared for examinations and procedures.

Financial Clearance responsibilities include making outbound calls confirming patient appointments, ensuring demographics are reviewed and correct and ensuring price estimation is completed and communicated in a timely manner. Explain financial requirements and obligations to patients and enter payments into the HIM system. Ensure prior authorization is secured from the payer and verification of insurance details. Informing patients of non-covered charges as appropriate.

Performs other duties as assigned.

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent.
  • Two (2) years accumulated experience in a clerical or healthcare related position.
  • BLS certification or must obtain during Orientation and prior to reporting to department.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Post high school education.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Experience in a medical work environment.
  • Working knowledge of medical insurance plans.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
  • Ability to negotiate effective working relationships and develop positive resolution to conflict.
  • Excellent time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to problem solve, multi-task in a fast-paced setting and work well in a team environment.
  • Highly developed computer skills to include proficiency with Microsoft Office, telephone system and the ability to learn and proficiently perform computer applications related to department operations and job function.
  • High degree of accuracy with concentration and close attention to detail.
  • Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.

Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment with prolonged sitting.
  • Work maybe subject to interruption and occasional high stress levels.
  • Occasional standing and walking.
  • Ability to work occasional extended hours, evenings and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.
  • Works with highly confidential information which may be proprietary or protected health information.

  • Uses computer and other standard office equipment including but not limited to: telephone, fax, copier, calculator, and scanners.
  • Repetitive wrist, finger and hand movement.
  • Occasional manipulation of large volumes of books, charts, reports or files.
  • Ability to lift supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to push wheelchairs for patients.
  • Ability to push workstation on wheels throughout various hospital locations.
  • Lifting, pushing, pulling, walking, sitting, reaching, bending, kneeling or stooping to perform duties in a safe manner.
