Job Summary

To assist classroom teacher in helping students to increase their academic and social skills as well as prepare them for inclusive activities into general education classrooms. Assist in maintaining a safe and orderly environment. Assist in reducing problem behavior in/on school facilities to reduce disruptions and off-task behavior within the classroom. Under the guidance of the teacher, assist in facilitating all goals and objectives contained in students IEP, including functional academic programming, small group instruction, one-on-one tutoring, and assignment completion.

To meet the developmental needs of school-age children by implementing activities that encourage independence and responsibility. To provide exemplary performance in all aspects of child-care duties and ensure that all work performed is completed to standard. To demonstrate a positive attitude, loyalty, cooperation, teamwork, attendance, and safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist the classroom teacher in supporting students’ academic and social skill development.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly learning environment.
  • Reduce problem behavior and classroom disruptions.
  • Help students meet goals and objectives outlined in their IEPs.
  • Provide functional academic programming developed by the teacher.
  • Offer small-group instruction and one-on-one tutoring.
  • Assist with assignment completion and concept reinforcement.
  • Supervise and assist students with personal hygiene programming.
  • Administer CPR, first aid, and medication as appropriate.
  • Support environmental mobility programming within the community setting.
  • Assist in adaptive physical education, special events, field trips, assemblies, tours, and concerts.
  • Attend to all student needs during the day, including movement between classes, art, music, physical education, physical therapy, recess, restrooms, personal hygiene, and occupational therapy.
  • Carry out teacher-directed activities to reach student goals individually or in groups.
  • Prepare specialized teaching aids and materials as planned by the teacher.
  • Implement recommendations from consulting professionals (occupational therapist, physiotherapist, speech/language pathologist).
  • Enforce classroom rules and procedures to maintain a fair, supportive, inclusive, and positive learning environment.
  • Use reinforcement strategies such as prompting, modeling, and shaping.
  • Model and guide activities that integrate children with special needs.
  • Provide feedback and reinforcement consistent with the teacher’s behavior-management plan.
  • Read and comprehend at the student’s grade level or higher.
  • Develop working rapport with students.
  • Interact with students using positive reinforcement and effective communication.
  • Greet students and parents upon arrival.
  • Help students become part of the class community.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information and student records.
  • Keep the environment clean, sanitary, orderly, and safe.
  • Ensure student health and safety on the playground and during field trips.
  • Record behavioral data, accident reports, and other relevant information.
  • Plan, review, and report student needs, concerns, and performance with the teacher and team.
  • Assist students with completing classroom assignments and reinforcing concepts.
  • Implement effective behavior-control strategies as directed by the teacher.
  • Use established communication systems with teachers for collaborative monitoring.
  • Build student self-esteem and encourage caring and helpful behaviors among students.
  • Perform teacher-directed clerical duties and school supervision duties.
  • Abide by District and school policies and procedures.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development specific to students and classroom needs.
  • Identify and respond to problems as they arise.
  • Attend and share information for IEP and team meetings and conferences.
  • Demonstrate reliable attendance, punctuality, and dependability.
  • Serve as an appropriate role model for students.
  • Plan and organize work to meet schedules and deadlines efficiently.
