Job Summary/Goal: Assist classroom teachers in helping students increase academic and social skills, prepare students for inclusive activities in general education classrooms, maintain a safe environment, and reduce disruptions through behavior management. Assist in facilitating all goals and objectives contained in students' IEPs, including functional academic programming, small group instruction, one‑on‑one tutoring, and assignment completion.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following responsibilities are typical for this role and may vary by season, grade level, and activity usage. Other duties may be assigned to fulfill student needs.
- Assist students with personal hygiene programming and health & safety measures such as administering CPR, first aid, trach care, medication management, and catheter care.
- Supervise students during environmental mobility programming, field trips, assemblies, and special events.
- Support all student needs during the day: movement between classes, art, music, PE, PT, recess, restrooms, personal hygiene, and occupational therapy.
- Carry out teacher‑directed activities to meet student goals individually or in group settings.
- Prepare specialized teaching aids and materials as planned by the teacher.
- Implement recommendations from consultants (occupational therapist, physiotherapist, speech‑language pathologist).
- Enforce rules and procedures to maintain a fair, supportive, inclusive, and positive learning environment.
- Use reinforcement strategies such as prompting, modeling, and shaping.
- Provide modeling and guidance for integrating children with special needs.
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, orderly, and safe environment.
- Record behavioral data, accident reports, and other required documentation.
- Collaborate with teachers and the instructional team to review and report student needs, concerns, and performance.
- Assist students with classroom assignments and tasks reinforcing teacher concepts.
- Respond to crises and apply crisis prevention intervention techniques.
- Attend relevant IEP and team meetings and conferences, and share information with supporting personnel and administration.
- Demonstrate reliable attendance, promptness, and professional appearance.
- Participate in ongoing professional development specific to student and classroom needs.
- Use universal health care precautions and maintain a safe learning environment.
- Plan and organize work to efficiently meet schedules and deadlines.
- Accept and follow directions and instructions willingly.
- Learn and implement appropriate behavior techniques and address inappropriate behavior proactively.
- Respond to crisis intervention effectively.
- Understand district and school programs relevant to the learning environment.
- Have or be willing to receive CPI training.
- Collaborate effectively within the instructional team.
- Communicate verbally and in writing with students, families, and administration.
- Maintain professional growth and keep mandatory training current (First Aid, CPR, etc.).
- Assist in preparing, serving, and cleaning up breakfast, lunch, and snacks as needed.
- Possess patience, genuine interest in helping students, and the ability to promote self‑sufficiency.
- Have knowledge of educational areas such as music, arts, sports, and games.
- Lead student activities and model positive behavior.
