Job Description

Position Title: Mechanic

Immediate Supervisor: Transportation Manager

Summary: Under limited supervision, perform work of considerable difficulty in the repair and maintenance of the District's small vehicles and buses to keep them in a state of operating excellence that presents no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned.)

  • Examine, analyze and diagnose problems with District vehicles and implement needed repair and maintenance for all District vehicles.
  • Service, repair, adjust and maintain all District vehicles.
  • Perform routine and scheduled maintenance service such as oil changes, lubrications, tune-ups, etc.
  • Perform routine and non‑routine inspections to identify problems or defects for all District vehicles.
  • Perform all preventative maintenance as needed / scheduled on all District vehicles.
  • Analyze requirements and make recommendations on schedule for preventive maintenance program for district vehicles and equipment.
  • Compile estimates of repair costs and secure the Transportation Manager's approval to perform repairs / purchase materials.
  • Record and maintain service and repair records for each vehicle, via paper documentation or through use of computer based fleet maintenance software.
  • Utilize electronic diagnostic equipment to evaluate vehicle systems.
  • Perform road testing to determine the safety and reliability of all vehicles.
  • Repair components on all systems, including the recommended replacement of equipment and materials for the department.
  • Prepare and maintain required records and reports as assigned by the Transportation Manager.
  • Act as lead person as assigned by the Transportation Manager.
  • Drive school bus/van routes as required by the Transportation Manager.
  • Abide by all District, State and Federal policies, rules and regulations.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education or

Experience:

High school diploma or GED.

Licensure or Certification: Valid Iowa CDL (Commercial Drivers License) with passenger and school bus endorsements. Ability to satisfactorily meet the requirements of a DOT physical examination. Subject to pre‑employment and random drug and alcohol testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to effectively operate all District shop equipment including but not limited to diagnostic equipment, and computer based software programs.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, tools and techniques used in vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to accurately diagnose mechanical problems and perform required repairs.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow all established safety rules and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical design and fabrication and electrical systems.
  • Ability to use power and hand tools.
  • Ability to safely and properly lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted and up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
  • Ability to work extended hours.
  • Ability to interpret and effectively follow written and verbal instructions, including manufacturers' service specifications.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read, write, add and subtract.
  • Knowledge of and ability to repair a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with co‑workers, students, administration and the public.
  • Awareness of and adherence to all district requirements and board policies.
