Job Description

Title: Special Education Preschool Teacher

Department: Certified

Responsible To: Educational assistants (para‑professionals), volunteers, student teachers

Qualifications: Must hold a valid Ohio Teaching License and/or appropriate Endorsement and Authorization for the assignment. Bachelor’s Degree in education from an accredited college or university. Other alternatives may be acceptable.

Terms of Employment: Contract. Salary and benefits per negotiated agreement. Salary ranges from $48,375 to $89,584.

Job Goal: The teacher is the primary instructional delivery person in the classroom and plans, implements, and evaluates student learning experiences designed to address a wide range of maturity and skill levels. The teacher helps students develop language, social, cognitive, and motor skills and encourages parental involvement. Student learning and growth are primarily dependent on the work and effort of the classroom teacher.

The position is demanding, varied, and complex and requires excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal skills, and well‑trained content knowledge and research‑based effective teaching, intervention, and behavior strategies.

Position requires successful completion and periodic renewal of state‑mandated and service center training requirements (e.g., communicable disease, child abuse, CPR, first aid, and/or behavioral management training).

Performance Responsibilities
  • Ensure the safety of students.
  • Focus on student learning with appropriate learning objectives that include measurable goals aligned with Ohio standards.
  • Instruct assigned classes in the locations and times designated.
  • Use a variety of formal and informal assessment techniques to collect evidence of students’ knowledge and skills and analyze data to inform instructional planning.
  • Prepare clear, detailed, and timely lesson plans that reflect appropriate and differentiated academic content consistent with students’ IEPs and state standards.
  • Provide an educational program for students as defined by their Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  • Effectively use technology to support high‑quality instruction and student learning.
  • Plan and sequence instruction to include content, developmental concepts, and processes in school and district curriculum priorities and state standards.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with students’ background knowledge and describe multiple procedures used to obtain this information.
  • Collaborate with intervention, related services, and support staff to accommodate and/or modify the curriculum and implement evidence‑based interventions to ensure learning goals are met.
  • Support learning needs with a variety of strategies, interventions, materials, and developmental pacing that make learning accessible and challenging for each student.
  • Maintain positive rapport with students and demonstrate respect for and interest in all students.
  • Create routines and procedures that run smoothly; students assume age‑appropriate responsibility for classroom operation.
  • Provide substantive, specific, and timely feedback of student progress to students, families, and other school personnel while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Comply with district, federal, and state laws, model policies and procedures, and regulations for educating students with disabilities; ensure accurate paperwork and timely report submission while maintaining HIPAA and FERPA confidentiality.
  • Lead the preparation and implementation of IEPs for eligible classroom students; complete paperwork accurately and enter data correctly.
  • Train and collaborate with assigned paraprofessionals.
  • Evaluate student achievement and prepare periodic progress reports using appropriate assessment and data‑collection methods.
  • Collaborate with staff to develop and implement behavior improvement plans and chart behavior as required.
  • Schedule home visits when appropriate to support program goals.
  • Adapt to unique circumstances such as travel, extended hours, or student behavior issues.
