Duties

The prosthetist/orthotist at this level serves as the supervisor and laboratory manager for large laboratories or multiple satellite laboratories, reporting to the Chief of the Central Fabrication Unit. This assignment includes serving as a VISN resource/consultant for orthotics and prosthetics; and performing or overseeing testing and evaluation of design concepts. Incumbent will supervise a service of significant complexity, such as Central Fabrication Unit.

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

The incumbent functions in the capacity to provide complex service assessment, planning and evaluation of the prosthetic clinical services at the facility level to ensure proper coordination between the delivery of prosthetic and orthotic services and the overall delivery of health care. Responsibilities include assuring the accreditation of the laboratory, regulatory compliance and a variety of administrative duties such as developing and maintaining a budget;

managing and providing data to leadership; managing inventory and resources, reviewing contracted vendor quotes for correct pricing, supervising assigned staff, etc.

The assignment includes performance of the full range of supervisory duties. This includes responsibility for assignment of duties; development of performance standards and performance evaluations; staff recruitment and interviewing, recommendations for appointment, and overseeing training; disciplinary action, etc. At this level, the supervisory prosthetist/orthotist serves as a consultant within multiple medical centers for clinical services and with other facility health care staff in evaluating health care delivery to patient.

  • The incumbent is responsible for the overall management of laboratory staff, equipment, physical plant and other material sources relating to the prosthetic/orthotic laboratories within designated facilities.
  • Establishes and implements program goals to accomplish the multiple missions of the Central Fabrication Unit services within the resources available and time frame set. The incumbent is responsible for providing a vision and leading the development of these activities, as well as writing directives for clinical and administrative support staff.
  • Ensures proper and timely product design, fabrication, fitting and delivery of prosthetic/orthotic devices in compliance with the physicians and clinic requests.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with affiliate providers and seeks opportunities to network across VISN 10 and beyond.
  • Ensures the maintenance of medical and administrative records and data to ensure proper documentation for JC, CARF, ABC and quality assurances purposes. Maintains ABC accreditation for lab. VISN 10 FS# 91757-0
  • Ensures that all management reports and data are prepared, reviewed and submitted in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory accountability and levels.
  • Establishment and appropriate maintenance of employee records.
  • Facilitates and manages hiring and staffing activities related to their local station FTE.
  • Designs and implements training and competencies for current and new staff, as well as affiliate providers, and regularly updates as technology changes. Competencies and training courses are documented at least annually. Ensures appropriate completion of all TMS and required education amongst subordinate staff.
  • Utilizes LEAN theories and principles of High Reliability Organization (HRO) in managing daily workflow.
  • Maintains occupational safety and facility safety requirements that are unique to the lab. Escalates concerns and proactively identifies and resolves potential safety issues.
  • Incumbent will be required to support national EHRM implementation and facility/VISN goals related to deployment.
