Job Overview

Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) seeks a production team member at its full-service rail tank car repair shop in Marion, Ohio. The role involves preparing, cleaning, coating, and inspecting tank and hopper cars to meet company and regulatory standards.

• Prepares the interior or exterior surface of the tank or hopper car for coating or lining by removing rust, slag, scale, or other contaminants using shot-laden compressed air from handheld blast nozzles.
• Uses safety‑approved air guns to remove grit and dust after blasting.
• Removes protective car coverings, cleans trucks and other car parts, and inspects the car for damage.
• Grinds away weld spatter, laminations, and sharp edges inside tank/hopper cars; grinds girth weld level on floor when required.
• Vacuums the complete interior of tank/hopper cars.
• Foils and tapes all stainless‑steel surfaces inside the tank car as required.
• Maintains equipment and replenishes supplies.
• Selects and prepares coatings following work specifications and applies the coating using air‑less spray equipment. Masks off components such as valves, trucks, and couplers.
• Mixes coatings according to specifications and applies the coating to repair or install a section.
• After coating, applies piping before starting the bake procedure; turns on the blower for a specified period and monitors temperature until intermediate or final bake is completed.
• Stores a record of baking operations.
• Applies decals as required to the tank or hopper car exterior.
• Clears completed interior coating before final inspection.
• Maintains a neat and orderly work area and reports potential hazards.

• High school diploma, GED, or passage of a combined basic skills test.
• Job‑related knowledge or skills of reading blueprints and using shop measuring devices (straight‑edge rulers, welding gauges, dial gauges).
• Successful completion of qualification requirements for non‑destructive testing procedures.
• Ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently.
• Can follow written or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with attention to detail.
• Safe and quality focused.
• Availability to work any shift and reliable attendance, including overtime as permitted by the union contract.

Moderate to heavy lifting, climbing, ascending or descending ladders, lifting tools and equipment up to 60‑65 lbs., occasional outside work. Risk of minor cuts or bruises, caution required in confined areas, possible exposure to hazardous materials or waste from leaks or spills.

Pay Range: $29.42 per hour (varies by shift and experience).
