The Police Officer is primarily responsible for maintaining safety and security on school grounds by patrolling the area, responding to emergencies, investigating crimes, and working to prevent criminal activity, while also acting as a resource for students, staff, faculty and the wider community by fostering positive relationships and providing crime prevention education.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Patrol:

Conduct both foot and vehicle patrols of the campus.

Make regular inspection tours of the campus facilities noting unusual occurrences.

Observe and report hazardous conditions to management.

Monitor parking lots and direct traffic and parking as necessary.

Provide traffic and parking control with the writing and administration of citations.

Safety & Emergency Response:

Watch for trespassers, fire, water leaks, or other circumstances which could lead to loss or damage to property and equipment.

Act as a first responder to all campus emergencies, medical and criminal, that could potentially be hazardous and/or life threatening.

Unlock buildings as scheduled and ensures all windows and doors are locked as scheduled

Ensure inside and outside lights are turned on/off as required and informs supervisor when any electrical or mechanical system is malfunctioning.

Observe weather conditions on campus and report dangerous or unusual weather-related activity to management.

Complete investigations of College violations, including viewing camera footage, talking with witnesses, and writing incident reports.

Act as a liaison for the College with local law enforcement.

Campus Community

Education:

Enforce state laws and campus policies and procedures as may relate to safety and security concerns.

Assist Residence and Student Life with enforcement of hall regulations and Code of Conduct Violations.

Direct visitors and assists as necessary.

Enforce campus policies including smoking, alcohol usage, and drug usage.

Act as a liaison for the College with local law enforcement.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required

Education:

Must be certified as a sworn Police Officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Required Experience:

Prior experience as a sworn Police Officer preferred.

Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire.

Competencies:

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively and professionally with individuals at all levels of the organization and the general public.

Ability to quickly learn and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures.

Knowledge of, and ability to perform, defensive tactics necessary for officer and public safety.

Ability to respond rapidly and appropriately in emergency situations.

Familiarity with police practices, procedures, and philosophies, with the ability to continue learning and applying them.

Physical capability to perform the full range of law enforcement duties.

Ability to gather information, evaluate data, and prepare accurate and timely reports.
