* Schedule includes regularly scheduled nights, Saturdays and Sundays
** Working on Sunday’s includes a $2.00/hour stipend, per the MMEA Union Contract
DEFINITION/PURPOSEThis position provides direct customer service for a vibrant, multi-cultural population in a busy city library. Under the direction of the Head of Children’s Services, provides support to the daily activities in the Children’s Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS(The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Serves mainly at the Children’s Services desk and performs wide range of duties including but not limited to: register borrowers; charges/discharges print and non-print materials to patrons in accordance with library policies. Collects fees. Answers inquiries on the telephone and in person. Gives directional information.
- Provides effective, and efficient customer service and promotes positive community relations.
- Assists with variety of creative library programs designed to encourage participation of library patrons, including but not limited to, story time, craft programs and author visits.
- Assists with creating book lists and book displays.
- Resolves minor patron issues; refers more complex patron issues to supervisor.
- Covers other departments as directed.
- Maintains confidentiality of patron records according to library policy and Mass General Law.
- Assists with running reports, cataloging, or other detail-oriented tasks
- Assists patrons in use of the catalog, placing holds, requesting museum passes and borrowing from the Library of Things.
- Assists public with and serves as resource for patron technical/computer questions.
- Sends materials to other libraries and assists in distributing holds and network transfers. May contribute to shelf reading and weeding.
- Familiarity with Spanish, Portuguese desirable
- Performs other duties as assigned.
College graduate preferred or any equivalent combination of work/educational experience. Experience working with children and/or customer service desirable.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:- Knowledge of Children’s literature
- Knowledge of library services and library technologies
- Ability to problem solve, exhibit flexibility, initiative and diplomacy
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public in person, on the telephone and in writing.
- Knowledgeable with computer software and hardware including brochure design, production software and mobile devices
- Familiarity with Spanish, Portuguese desirable.
