Department of Public Works – Fleet Maintenance Division

The City of Marlborough’s Department of Public Works is seeking to fill the full-time (40 hours) position of SMEO/Laborer in the Fleet Maintenance Division.

Essential Job Functions
  • Perform skilled repair and maintenance of motor equipment; inspect and service vehicles and equipment and troubleshoot all components with both gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Perform tune‑ups, front‑end work such as alignments, remove and replace transmissions, remove and disassemble diesel and gasoline engines, replace faulty work parts.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems both in vehicles and equipment.
  • Remove, repair, and adjust both air and hydraulic systems on cars, trucks, and heavy equipment.
  • Highly skilled in welding and fabrication.
  • May perform minor auto body work and related metal working duties.
  • Perform preventative maintenance of city‑owned equipment.
  • Responsible for filling out work orders and ordering parts for specifically assigned jobs.
  • Perform physical, manual labor using department equipment including but not limited to hand and power tools such as shovels, picks, axes, saws, heavy wrenches and small power tools.
  • Participate in snow and ice operations.
  • Attend seminars and training programs to maintain required licenses or certifications and to keep aware of current safety operating practices and procedures.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Assistant Commissioner of Operations, Commissioner of Public Works, Foreman or General Foreman.
Supervisor

Under the general supervision of the General Foreman and the Assistant Commissioner of Operations. The employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently with specific instruction. The supervisor provides additional, specific instruction for new, difficult or unusual assignments, including suggested work methods. The employee is expected to recognize instances which are out of the ordinary and do not fall within existing instructions;

then seek advice and further instructions. Reviews and checks verify work progress and ensure completed work is technically accurate and follows instructions.

Work Environment

The employee works both indoors and outdoors on a variety of motor equipment repair and maintenance. The environment exposes the employee to machinery, noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease, and risk of personal injury. Work is performed outdoors regardless of weather. The employee may work beyond normal business hours at nights and/or on weekends in response to emergencies on a 24-hour basis, 365 days per year.

Accountability

The nature of the required work or operation of potentially dangerous equipment increases the probability that the consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include significant waste of material, damage to buildings, equipment, and danger to public safety and/or personal injury. The employee is responsible for making every effort to avoid these consequences.

Education and Experience

Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent; 5 years of experience as an automotive mechanic.

Special Requirements

Candidate must have a valid Class B MA CDL and Hoisting License 2B. Required to be available during snow and ice events. May be given 1 year to obtain the above licenses at the discretion of the City. Must have own tools; specialty tools are provided by the department.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skills

Knowledge:
Working knowledge of repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and equipment.
Abilities:
Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions and adhere to safety precautions to perform duties efficiently and safely, often under adverse weather conditions.

Skills:

Fine motor skill to operate department tools and equipment required to perform position duties, including operation of a tractor-trailer for safe transportation of materials and debris.
