Position: Sr Shop Trailer Mechanic $5000 New Hire Bonus

Job Summary

We are looking for a Sr. Shop Trailer Mechanic to work in a dedicated on‑site shop. In this role you will perform DOT inspections, preventative maintenance (PM), and routine and advanced repairs on light, medium and heavy‑duty trucks and trailers. You will also provide technical consultation to customers and support the next level technicians with diagnostics and parts sourcing.

Duties
  • Follow and enforce safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Independently determine and secure the parts required for each job.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and assist with cleanup at day’s end.
  • Apply technical knowledge to perform tasks, evaluate information, and troubleshoot problems.
  • Collaborate with the Service Writer to assess customer needs and resolve issues.
  • Manage multiple tasks, prioritizing work and allocating time effectively.
  • Act with integrity, uphold confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards.
  • Perform scheduled PM, DOT inspections, and remedial repairs in a shop setting.
  • Conduct routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks and lubrication.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts and jacks.
  • Document work on Repair Orders (RO) and upload photos using the company device or Karmak application.
  • Complete DOT forms and all documentation accurately and timely.
  • Maintain productivity while meeting or exceeding standard repair times.
  • Communicate with the Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals, purchase orders and discuss RO findings.
  • Work in compliance with safety, health, environmental and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA and DOT.
  • Participate in all company‑required safety training.
  • Maintain assigned service trucks, perform safety checks and pre/post trip inspections.
  • Make minor adjustments and repairs to trailer equipment: aluminum, chem‑lite, brakes, air lines, pumps, engines, liftgates, brake chambers, steering systems.
  • Diagnose, adjust and repair trailer equipment and systems, including welding, fabrication and body repairs.
  • Identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and make recommendations using sound judgment.
  • Inspect, test and listen for defects, using instruments such as computers and pressure gauges.
  • Assist and support Shop Trailer Technician I and II with diagnostics and parts sourcing.
  • Perform advanced diagnostics and triage of complicated repairs for technicians I/II.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED with at least 5 years of related experience (alternatives: any degree/certification beyond HS with 3–7 years of experience).
  • Possess a set of hand tools required for job duties.
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.
  • Complete all company‑required training programs.
  • Pass DOT‑regulated background screening and DOT physical; a DOT medical card with at least 4 months remaining may substitute for the physical.
  • Drivers must be at least 21 years old; maintain valid state driver’s license and Driver Qualification File.
Skills & Abilities
  • Deep knowledge of trailer parts and systems for repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to apply new information to problem solving and decision making.
  • Physical stamina for lifting, bending, climbing, standing and walking for long periods; capable of moderate heavy labor.
  • Strong judgment of object distance and spatial relationships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; organize and convey information clearly.
  • Determine appropriate tools and equipment for tasks.
  • Use logic and reasoning to assess alternatives and propose solutions.
Required Certifications (within 18 months)
  • ASE T8 (PMI) certification
  • ASE 608/609 certification
  • CDL‑A License
Preferred Certifications
  • ASE T4 (Brakes) certification
  • ASE T5 (Suspension) certification
  • ASE T6 (Electrical and Electronic Systems) certification
  • ASE T7 (HVAC) certification

Compensation

Hourly rate: $29.42 – $44.13 per hour, varying by location, qualifications and performance. Position may be eligible for commission and incentive programs.

New Hire Bonus: $5,000 (50% after 30 days, 50% after 180 days).
