What You Will Do
GFT is seeking an experienced Substation P & C Designer to join our expanding Power Group. The position can be remote or hybrid in Charlotte, NC, or Roanoke, VA. The designer will focus on protection and control design of high‑voltage substation projects up to 765 kV.
Responsibilities- Design and execution of high‑voltage substation projects in the 4 kV–765 kV range, emphasizing safety, cost, quality, and reliability.
- Generate detailed engineering deliverables under the supervision of lead engineers and project managers.
- Complete basic engineering calculations related to design and engineering deliverables.
- Develop one‑ and three‑line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, control and relay panel layouts, SCADA system interfaces, and auxiliary system designs (batteries, chargers, etc.).
- Compile complete list of relay and control materials for substation projects and quote/order materials per contractual agreements.
- Follow specific instructions from supervisors or engineers for complex design assignments.
- Investigate existing substation drawings and conditions to ensure compliance with industry standards and customer requirements.
- Travel to job sites for project assessment and data collection.
- Communicate and interact with clients.
- Perform quality reviews of projects completed by peers.
- 5+ years of relevant substation or general electrical T&D designing experience.
- Proficiency with computer‑aided drafting tools such as AutoCAD and Micro Station.
- Knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), National Electrical Code (NEC), and IEEE standards.
- Familiarity with substation voltages in MV, HV, and EHV ranges.
- Ability to apply project schedules to complete tasks on time and within budget.
- Strong written communication skills for routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to review project documents and recommend value‑engineering ideas.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
- Experience in the energy industry or a consulting services environment.
- Thorough knowledge of NESC, NEC, and IEEE codes.
The salary range for this role is $85,000 – $100,000, dependent on experience and geographic location.
