Lake Superior State University (LSSU) seeks qualified applicants for one part-time Research Technician at LSSU’s Center for Freshwater Research and Education (CFRE;(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).). The successful candidate will play a key role in contributing to CFRE’s research program and related undergraduate opportunities. Research activities will primarily focus on field surveys and lab analyses related to projects in the Great Lakes basin that address fisheries management and ecology, river and wetland bioassessment, and water quality.

CFRE’s Research Technicians lead field and lab research projects as directed and provide daily oversight of undergraduate researchers. We are seeking a part-time technician that will primarily support field projects, including collection and identification of Great Lakes fish and benthic samples (visit ).
LSSU is a small, state university located in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan, surrounded by three Great Lakes and many state, provincial, and national forests and parks that provide tremendous recreational opportunities and a high quality of life. The Richard and Theresa Barch CFRE building, opened in late 2021, sits on the St. Marys River, the sole outflow of Lake Superior and international boundary with Canada.

The Barch CFRE building provides expanded research facilities, including an analytical lab and experimental mesocosms, along with a Great Lakes Discovery Center and discovery lab for K-12 education. The facility is uniquely positioned to build partnerships to advance Great Lakes education, research, and community engagement in the region. Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in fisheries and wildlife, aquatic ecology or a related field; at least 1 year of experience working on aquatic ecology projects; demonstrated potential ability to perform essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description; demonstrated organizational skills; and a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

At least 2 years of experience conducting research in large river or Great Lake environments; demonstrated experience working with and supervising students; and experience identifying Great Lakes organisms.

Physical Demands:

Adequate physical fitness to be able to sit and concentrate for long periods of time and carry equipment >25 lbs; use of gross motor skills to perform supervisory and organizational duties; use of fine motor skills to operate equipment; social intelligence; problem solving ability; ability to understand and work with numbers; ability to see, hear, and speak with or without the use of aids to perform normal office and laboratory tasks.

The ability to work with highly hazardous chemicals in a safe manor.
