Law Enforcement Sheriff Deputies are assigned to the Field Services Division of the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office. The primary function of a Sheriff’s Deputy is to insure the health, safety, and well-being of our community through partnerships and pursuit of excellence. The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office has a strong relationship with our public and other agency partners. GeneralWork Duties
- Respond to citizen requests for service, appropriately documenting the incident when necessary.
- Conduct initial and follow-up investigations on crimes.
- Respond to, investigate, and render first aid at accidents.
- Provide traffic enforcement.
- Provide residential and business security checks.
- Provide security at special events.
- Provide court security.
- Assist with other agencies requesting assistance.
- Provide prisoner transport for court, hospital, and other appointments.
- Perform various administrative duties as directed.
- Possess and utilize effective written communication skills for police reports, daily activity logs, and other important documentation.
- Attend court on and off duty when required by subpoena.
- Attend and participate in Sheriff’s Office authorized training.
- Work mandatory overtime when directed by a supervisor.
- Follow lawful orders from superior officers concerning all aspects of the Sheriff office pertaining to assignments, duties and tasks.
- Engage in community events and community engagement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Adhere to departmental standards regarding HIPAA and other privacy issues.
- Establish and maintain operational standards relative to this position, including firearms and less lethal weapons training proficiency.
- During a public health emergency, perform duties similar to, but not limited to, those in this job description.
- Operate at proficiency level with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel) and all systems operational within the Office.
High School diploma or GED is the minimum education requirement to be considered. Associates degree/equivalent preferred.
ExperiencePrior experience in Law Enforcement or Military preferred.
Other Requirements- Uncorrected vision correctable to 20/20 vision in each eye by soft contact lenses, gas permeable lenses, and/or extended wear lenses. No greater than 20/40 vision in each eye correctable to 20/20 with glasses. Must not be color blind.
- No prior felony convictions ( expunged convictions).
- Valid Michigan driver’s license.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Pass background investigation and clinical evaluations.
- Licensable as a Law Enforcement Officer through MCOLES.
- Must be able to fulfill work that includes 12‑hour shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
Work in both indoor and outdoor environments and may be exposed to notable lights, noises, odors, temperatures or weather conditions. Operate a variety of vehicles (cars, trucks, tractors, forklifts, cranes, hoists, bucket trucks, boats, etc.). Exposure to traffic, moving vehicles, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, slippery surfaces, chemicals, cleaning solutions, oils, hazardous materials. Air quality conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation.
Noise levels requiring shouting. Communicable diseases, blood, other body fluids. Exposure to individuals in crisis. Use personal protective equipment to minimize risks.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, twist, bend, stoop/crouch, squat, kneel, crawl, lift, carry, push, pull, reach, grasp, handle, pinch, type, and endure repetitive movements of wrists, hands, or fingers.
