Qualifications
  • Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports).
  • The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
Reports To

The Principal, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with high school principals.

Supervises

In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate, and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

Job Goal

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The coach must also demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, self‑confidence, and pride in accomplishment within student athletes, and upgrade his/her knowledge through coaching clinics and professional development.

General
  • The success of athletic programs strongly influences the community's image. Public exposure brings considerable responsibility, and while community and parent pressure for winning can be taxing, it should not override objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health.
  • The position includes unusual aspects such as extended time, injury risk, and due process considerations.
  • This description provides sufficient guidance; in situations not specifically covered, a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.
  • Duties and Responsibilities
  • Possess thorough knowledge of all LVJUSD athletic policies and implement them with the entire sports program staff.
  • Understand existing system, state, and league regulations, implement consistently, and interpret them for staff.
  • Adhere to the proper administrative line of command, referring all requests or grievances through proper channels, and attend all required meetings.
  • Staff Responsibilities
  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff and design conferences, clinics, and meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth and encouraging clinic attendance.
  • Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and at season's end, analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants.
  • Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.
  • Administrative Duties
  • Assist the athletic director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sport events.
  • Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices, adhere to facility times, and coordinate program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provide documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Ensure proper safeguarding of equipment and its protection.
  • Advise the athletic director and recommend policy or procedural changes.
  • Student Responsibilities
  • Serve as a mentor to each athlete, promoting character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Give constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant while present at practices, games, and travel.
  • Provide training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete considered a participant.
  • Initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submit to the athletic office within 24 hours.
