Position: 2026-2027 School Year: Language Arts Teacher (Middle School)

SUMMARY:
The Language Arts teacher is responsible for the planning instruction and/or adoption of the education program to enable students to benefit from educational experiences. The teacher’s role is to develop in each student skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing that are fundamental to good communication and literate citizenship; to encourage appreciation of good literature; to motivate students to read widely for information and recreation;

to develop standards for critical judgment of written and oral communication; and to discover and develop special talents of students in the content area.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor s degree or higher
  • Valid Michigan elementary or secondary teaching certificate
  • Endorsement in English (BA) or Language Arts (BX)

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build trust and confidence with students
  • Teach district approved curriculum
  • Meet and plan regularly as part of the interdisciplinary teaching team for the use of academic time, the social / emotional environment and scheduling of students
  • Teach content and skills in English language, literature, composition and reading to students, utilizing courses of study and course/grade level expectations adopted by the Board of Education
  • Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter which is specified in state law and the administrative regulations and procedures of the district
  • Develop lesson plans, instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students
  • Encourage students to think independently and to express original ideas
  • Evaluate student progress in English skills (listening, speaking, mechanics, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and writing); report progress on appropriate minimal skill and team reporting forms
  • Assist in the selection and requisition of books, instructional aids and classroom supplies and maintain required inventory records
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems
  • Participate in the planning and instructing of reading with other Language Arts instructors (if applicable)
  • Administer group standardized tests in accordance with the district testing program
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and / or self selected professional growth activities
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student progress and to interpret the school program
  • Participate in curriculum development programs and in faculty committees
  • Maintain discipline in and out of the classroom
  • Assist in the planning or instruction of any other regular academic topic on a limited basis as determined by the make-up of his / her team (if necessary)
  • Read and be familiar with the School Student Handbook and Policy Manual of Marshall Public Schools; strict compliance with all rules, regulations and policies is required
  • Meet all contractual obligations as outlined in the Marshall Teachers’ Association Master Agreement
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the district s mission, vision and strategic priorities and actively works to advance them through daily practice and professional conduct
  • Contribute to the culture and climate of the district by modeling its core values, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment and serving as a committed representative of the district s identity and purpose in all interactions with students, families, staff and the broader community
  • Perform other related duties that may be assigned by the building principal

SALARY
:

Per Marshall Teachers Association Contract(BA or MA)

CONTRACT YEAR
:

184 days; M-F 7:25 AM - 2:40 PM
