Job Summary: The laboratory point of care coordinator is a lead position within the clinical laboratory that is responsible for the coordination of point of care testing. This support crosses multiple laboratory and clinic locations. The lab point of care coordinator provides technical resources and daily direction to nurses, medical assistants, and respiratory therapists with regard to laboratory policies and procedures and regulatory requirements.

The lab point of care coordinator assures quality testing and accurate test performance through operator training, competency assessment, equipment monitoring, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, quality control review, and proficiency testing. Incumbents operate under general supervision.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides technical oversight for point of care testing throughout Oaklawn to meet/exceed accreditation.
  • Ensures that the test systems are properly functioning. Maintains, troubleshoots and takes corrective action with equipment as needed.
  • Works with nursing, physicians, employees, and management as needed to ensure point of care testing is running efficiently and effectively.
  • Travel to each site at least semi-annually.
  • Coordinate training assessments. Develop and maintain teaching/training materials.
  • Participate in inspection readiness and activities for appropriate regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Write and maintain procedures using an approved format. Assist with development, maintenance and control of laboratory policy and procedures.
  • Provides leadership for the testing, interpretation and reporting of results.
  • Reviews quality control for problem identification and troubleshooting. Use quality control statistics and control procedures.
  • Develops and oversees validation/verification studies for new instruments, methods, and tests.
  • Make recommendations to management; responsible for staying current with new technologies and methodologies.
  • Provides support for point of care related information systems, including implementation and validation of new middleware/software/test systems/firmware.
  • Monitors POC middleware and software systems.
  • Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology. Two years’ (2) experience in a clinical laboratory with emphasis on skills related to work area.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Phlebotomy skills preferred. Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions. Must have basic computer skills. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, and procedure manuals. Exceptional interpersonal skills including cheerfully greeting customers and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

    Must be self-motivated, detail oriented, able to work under pressure, and able to multi-task. Proper use of phone etiquette is necessary. Must be able to present oneself positively with professionalism demonstrated through written and verbal word. Skills for problem solving either individually or as part of a team.

    Working Conditions: Work with potentially infectious blood/body fluid and hazardous material in a controlled protective setting.

    Physical Requirements: Constantly stand, walk, reach, see/visual acuity, handle/grasp/feel, bend/twist, stoop/kneel/crouch, talk/hear, lift/carry 1 to 25 lbs.
