Job Description

Successful candidates for this position will have the skills to help our students “get excited” about the lessons of economics and the vital decision‑making skills needed for effective agribusiness management. We are seeking qualified applicants who have demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence, written and oral communication skills, a distinct record of ongoing professional development, and an interest in student learning, growth and advancement.

Key responsibilities include teaching courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, money and banking, farm management, agricultural finance, cooperative management, and related agricultural and economics classes.

Responsibilities
  • Engage in academic advising for majors and minors in Agribusiness Management and Agricultural Economics, students in SMSU’s concurrent enrollment (College Now) program, and students taking economics courses as part of SMSU’s Liberal Education Program (LEP).
  • Meet the expectations of a full‑time Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) faculty member, including the Equity 2030 Goals and strong performance within the five criteria for professional development and evaluation: teaching effectiveness, scholarly and creative activity, continuing preparation and study, contributions to student growth and development, and service to the university and community.
  • Participate in the educational, recruitment and retention activities of SMSU’s Agriculture, Culinology and Hospitality Management (ACHM) Department.
  • Engage in regional and community service activities as part of SMSU’s special commitment to the educational needs of Southwest Minnesota.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics, or Economics with a specialization in Agriculture or related field.
  • One year of college‑level teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence.
  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Exhibit an interest in student learning, growth and advancement.
  • Display a student‑centered approach to education for the success and growth of SMSU’s Agribusiness Management and Economics Programs.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for liberal education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment and have a demonstrated ability to teach and work with persons from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Agricultural Economics, or Economics with a specialization in Agriculture.
  • Two or more years of college‑teaching experience.
  • Employment or internship experience(s) in agriculture.
  • Provide clear evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Demonstrated abilities/competence in instructional technology, including online, asynchronous and hybrid instruction.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary education.
  • Have a proven disposition towards community and university service.
