Position Summary
Special Education Paraprofessional at Marshall Middle School serving students in grades 5‑8 in Marshall Public Schools, Minnesota.
In addition to providing classroom support, the paraprofessional will serve as a bus rider as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Interact with students according to their Individualized Education Program (IEP) plan.
- Implement behavior plans and observe & intervene to redirect inappropriate behavior.
- Assist students with daily living activities such as dressing, eating, toileting, grooming, and other self‑care tasks.
- Recognize and respond to critical medical symptoms under the direction of the licensed school nurse.
- Assist with transfers, mobility, and positioning of students as directed by special education staff.
- Assist students in utilizing communication devices/tools as directed by staff.
- Monitor and guide students to complete tasks and provide age‑appropriate self‑management skills (problem‑solving, decision‑making, communication, conflict resolution, anger management, social skills, recreational skills).
- Implement approved de‑escalation techniques.
- Document delivery of services in written logs, behavior charts, etc.
- Promote a safe learning environment; provide supervision before/after school, recess, and lunch.
- Support students on special education bus routes as necessary.
- Model and assist students with social skills, turn taking, sportsmanship, and cooperative learning.
- Provide assistance to teachers as directed.
- Confidentiality and professionalism.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing student needs, schedules, and duties.
- Effective communication orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with students and staff.
- Physical restraint skills when necessary and support for students at risk.
- Ability to move around the building and maintain pace with students.
- Interpretation of written, oral, or scheduled information.
- Basic technology use.
- Completion of Personal Care Assistant (PCA) certification (required).
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to attain Highly Qualified Paraprofessional status.
Frequent stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, grasping, and repetitive motions. May need to lift and/or move at least 50 pounds of materials or lift students from wheelchairs. Close vision required to read handwritten or typed material. Must meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and staff. Exposure to extremes of temperature.
