Job Description

SMSU's Assistant Professor of Communication Studies is a full-time probationary position. Responsibilities include teaching courses in Broadcasting/Media as well as other areas of expertise. In keeping with the philosophical position of the program, this individual would also be responsible for teaching COMM 110 (basic oral communication course) on a regular basis in both an on campus and online format. In addition, this position will assist in advising the Broadcasting and Digital Media Activities of the program (requires on-campus availability on several evenings and weekends), serve as advisor to the SMSU Media Production club, supervise the Media Creation Lab (part of the University's Center for Online Learning and Teaching), and assist in the redesign of curriculum as needed to ensure students are well prepared for careers.

Based on experience and expertise, this position may also support other areas of the Communication Studies program such as Public Relations and Mass Communication Courses.

Minimum Qualifications

* MFA or Ph.D. in Communication, Mass Communication, or closely related field.

* Expertise in the area of film and/or artistic video production.

* Experience in teaching and supervising sports broadcasting.

* Expertise with media production software such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Final Cut Pro, Camtasia, Audacity, etc.

* Possess an understanding of and appreciation for liberal education.

* Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching online or through alternative modalities (hybrid, hyflex, etc.)

* Demonstrated ability to teach and work with persons from diverse backgrounds and commitment to fostering a global perspective.

Preferred Qualification

* Professional experience in narrative and/or documentary filmmaking.

* Experience with supervision of student media production activities.

* Post-secondary teaching experience.

* Experience in Public Relations.

* Priority will be given to those who apply by 2/6/26.
