A production mechanic conducts repair work and operates specialized engine testing equipment. The role includes assembly, pre‑paint wash/prep, mask sanding, painting, and training other operators. All levels may perform additional functions or support other departments as needed.
Key Job Elements- Assemble and test parts and components for locomotive engine.
- Demonstrate knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and welding disciplines.
- Read schematics, blueprints, standard work documents, and perform basic math.
- Maintain area cleanliness and organization.
- Follow verbal or written work instructions, standards, and QWI’s consistently, accurately, and safely.
- Fasten sub‑assembly parts together with bolts, screws, and additional fasteners.
- Route and apply electrical wiring harnesses.
- Perform balance tests and other quality tests as required.
- Diagnose malfunctions and perform adjustments or repairs to meet quality standards.
- Maintain and conduct preventive maintenance on components.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot assembly problems, part quality issues, and test results associated with new parts and engineering changes.
- Move units in and out of paint booths using crane.
- Power wash units for paint, check for leaks.
- Perform surface preparation and masking.
- Train new employees and cross‑train in all assembly areas.
- Safely operate equipment such as forklift and overhead cranes after proper training.
- 3–6 years heavy manufacturing experience.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Vocational or technical training and certification.
- Forklift and/or crane experience.
- Problem‑solving skills to assess and compensate for variations due to part quality, process variations, engineering changes, and part shortages.
- Familiar with manufacturing environment, industrial equipment, heavy structural assembly, and use of hand and power tools and measuring devices.
- Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, technical correspondence, and memos.
- Experience with industrial painting systems (bulk, pressured, syphon, HVLP, conventional spray with polyurethane, CARC coatings).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to present information effectively in one‑on‑one and group settings to customers and employees.
- Strength – Lift and carry up to 35 lbs; push and pull up to 50 lbs.
- Motion – Constant walking, frequent and sustained bending, crouching, stopping, kneeing, squatting, overhead reaching, and climbing ladders.
- Vision/Hearing – Follow written and verbal instructions and hear audible alarms.
- Work Environment – Work on varied surfaces, concrete floors, and gravel; operate at varied heights from floor level to tops of locomotives; work in confined spaces; non‑temperature controlled environments; all weather conditions with high noise and dust levels.
- Emotional Demands – Comfortable working alone in a noisy, dusty environment with required PPE.
- Safety – Safety‑sensitive position; must abide by all safety protocols, health/medical screenings, and PPE requirements.
Starting wage $20 per hour, wage flexible upon experience and education; must complete a 90‑day introductory period to continue employment.
