Horticulturalist / Gardener – Full‑Time

Landscaping By J. Michael is seeking a skilled horticulturalist/gardener with strong plant knowledge, hands‑on field experience, and a passion for creating and maintaining high‑quality landscapes. This role is ideal for someone who understands plant behavior, soil conditions, proper installation techniques, and long‑term care strategies for residential and commercial properties.

Position Overview

The Horticulturalist/Gardener is responsible for performing and overseeing all horticultural tasks, including plant selection, installation, pruning, garden bed management, seasonal color programs, and ongoing landscape health. This role requires a professional who can identify plant issues, recommend solutions, and maintain landscapes to a high standard.

Key Responsibilities
  • Select appropriate plant material based on site conditions, design intent, and client needs.
  • Install shrubs, perennials, annuals, trees, and specialty plantings using industry‑standard methods.
  • Perform expert pruning, shaping, deadheading, and thinning for plant health and aesthetics.
  • Diagnose plant health issues (pests, diseases, nutrient deficiencies) and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain garden beds: edging, mulching, weeding, soil conditioning, and seasonal cleanup.
  • Manage perennial gardens, foundation plantings, ornamental shrubs, and specialty gardens.
  • Implement seasonal color programs and container plantings.
  • Monitor irrigation needs and adjust watering schedules based on plant requirements.
  • Communicate professionally with clients and team members.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe condition.
Required

Skills & Qualifications
  • Strong horticultural knowledge: plant identification, growth habits, bloom cycles, and care requirements.
  • Experience with New England plant material, including shrubs, perennials, evergreens, and native species.
  • Ability to assess soil conditions and recommend amendments.
  • Skilled in proper pruning techniques for ornamental shrubs and small trees.
  • Knowledge of integrated pest management (IPM).
  • Ability to work independently and manage daily tasks efficiently.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of horticulture or professional gardening experience (preferred).
  • Degree or certification in horticulture, botany, or related field (preferred but not required).
