We are Building a Better World for All of Us®. SEH is seeking a full-time experienced Traffic Engineer to join an established and collaborative traffic engineering team. This role is suited for an experienced engineer who leads and delivers traffic design work across multimodal transportation projects of varying size and complexity to enhance safety, mobility, and system performance.
Responsibilities- Prepare and coordinate design plans and specifications for traffic engineering items including traffic signals, hybrid beacons, rectangular flashing beacons, Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and construction phasing, traffic signing, and pavement marking.
- Manage, direct, and complete tasks or projects for varied project types including construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation of urban corridors, highways, interchanges, county and city roadways, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and demonstration projects.
- Apply quality management and quality assurance processes; contribute to review and delivery of traffic design deliverables; collaborate with team members on transportation projects.
The successful candidate must demonstrate strong attention to detail, effective communication, teamwork, and working knowledge of the MUTCD and relevant design guidance.

- Lead traffic design teams and collaborate with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to optimize safety, innovation, and constructability
- Apply MUTCD, AASHTO, and state DOT standards to real-world design challenges
- Support or lead innovative design solutions on complex and high-profile transportation projects
- Author Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) to analyze MOT impacts and staging strategies
- Provide strong quality management and QA for all design plans and deliverables
- Collaborate with SEH’s highway design, planning, civil, wastewater, landscape architecture and other groups, with potential collaboration on projects in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, and Texas
- This opportunity is open to candidates residing in Minnesota, North Dakota, or Iowa
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering
- Licensed Professional Engineer in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, or South Dakota with ability to be licensed in Minnesota within 3 months
- Experience in Traffic Design including preparation of Final Construction Documents for signing and pavement marking
- Proficiency in Micro Station/Open Roads Designer and AutoCAD and/or Civil3D
- Working knowledge of MnDOT/MN MUTCD Standards and best practices
- Experience directing traffic engineering design work and QA/QC reviews for 30%, 60%, 90% submittals including cost estimates and specifications
- Experience working with multidisciplined teams on complex projects
- Proficiency in SignCAD
- MnDOT Work Type 14.6 Signing Plan Design and Special Provisions Levels 1–3
- MnDOT Work Type 14.4 Temporary Traffic Control Plan Design & Special Provisions Levels 1–3
- Experience with staging, MOT, traffic signals and ITS design
- Established client relationships with City, County, MnDOT and other agencies; additional relationships in surrounding states are a plus
- Active participation in professional organizations, conferences, and technical publications
- Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification
- Road Safety Professional 1 (RSP1) certification
- Working knowledge of HCS, Synchro/Sim Traffic or other traffic engineering software; working knowledge of GIS
