The purpose of this position is to perform licensed practical nursing service care and treatment to chronically mentally ill and developmentally disabled residents according to physicians' orders and established nursing practices, rules and regulations. The work is performed under the direction of the supervising Unit Head Nurse.

• Set up, administer, monitor and chart oral and intramuscular medications, catheterizations, enemas, venipuncture and other treatments; perform intakes and chart residents’ blood pressure, temperature, blood sugar and blood pressure.
• Observe residents for changes in physical or emotional condition; assess crisis situations and take appropriate action; inform supervising Registered Nurse; chart observations.
• Take and record physician's orders and notify all nursing and treatment team members such as pharmacists, technicians and other nursing shift personnel of changes.
• Supervise the work of psychiatric technicians and other Licensed Practical Nurses.
• Reassure and provide emotional support to residents; converse with residents to assure they are comfortable and explain therapies, treatments, medications and changes.
• Ensure that safety and security standards are complied with.
• Chart nutritional and fluid intake, bowel movements, fluid output and other resident activities such as leaving the facility.
• Assist in maintaining supplies and medication inventories.
• Maintain knowledge of nursing principles, methods and standards; healthcare, sanitation, hygiene and medical and psychiatric treatment.
• Attend care conferences, in‑service training, staff and facility meetings.
• Assist in evaluating technician's work.

• Answer telephone calls.
• Chart routine activities.
• Chart ADLs with residents.
• Change bed linens, serve meals, assist bathing residents, conduct census checks, ambulate residents and assist residents in a variety of routine tasks.

Vocational degree in Practical Nursing and prior practical nursing experience preferably in an institutional setting, or a combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
