General Function

The purpose of this position is to evaluate and treat individuals in crisis and those with severe mental illness. Responsibilities include obtaining and implementing physician work orders, notifying appropriate parties of changes in condition, and performing all duties under the supervision of the Head Nurse and Director of Nursing.

Supervises

This position supervises psychiatric technicians.

Responsibilities Essential Functions
  • Collaborate with physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers as part of the treatment team.
  • Utilize the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of psychiatric and medical illnesses, including substance abuse.
  • Evaluate patients for treatment response, monitor vital signs, observe behavior, and respond appropriately and promptly in a therapeutic manner; complete physician orders and all assigned work timely.
  • Respond to resident/patient emergencies including psychiatric emergencies, critical illness, and fire alarms; evaluate situations and take appropriate action.
  • Prepare and implement patient/resident care plans; maintain complete and accurate charts for treatments and medications.
  • Administer oral medications, intramuscular and intravenous injections, range‑of‑motion exercises, catheterizations, enemas, and other treatments; chart in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Provide consultation and referral information to external agencies and teams; screen prospective admissions and ensure compliance with procedures and forms.
  • Supervise subordinate nursing staff for technique, quality of care, and use of equipment; review chart recordings; prepare evaluations; conduct staff orientations and in‑services; participate in disciplinary processes as needed.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and referral sources; explain recovery progress, therapies, medications, and changes.
  • Respond to family inquiries and notify them regarding personal item needs such as clothing, glasses, etc.
  • Participate in facility committees, staff meetings, in‑services, and continuing education seminars.

  • Assist residents with eating, toileting, ambulation, repositioning, and other daily living tasks; arrange transportation as needed; tidy patient rooms.
  • Assist in subduing or restraining agitated or violent patients, as needed.
  • Distribute meals and snacks.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment; answer telephone calls.
  • Staff the unit while maintaining safety and fiscal responsibility.
  • Act as administrative charge for the entire facility in the absence of the Director of Nursing, Administrator, or Client Services Manager.
  • Job Qualifications
    • Associate degree in Nursing; one to two years of nursing experience, preferably in behavioral health.
    • Wisconsin Registered Nurse license required.
