The position involves caring for cardiac medical and surgical patients. Common diagnoses include stent, pacemaker, ICD placements, mitral clip, and TAVR. Post-surgical cases may involve CABG, valve replacements, Afib, chest pain, CHF, arrhythmias, and syncope. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4 on days and 1:5-6 on nights. There is a central telemetry unit that monitors non-critical care patients. RNs are required to read their own strips.
Common titratable and/or set rate drips include Nitroglycerin, Heparin, Diltiazem, Amiodarone, Lasix, Bumex, and Dobutamine. Charge nurses take a modified patient assignment. Nurse aides are available with varying ratios based on the shift. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7 for patient support. RN responsibilities include using incentive spirometry and assisting with CPAP and BiPAP. Shifts are typically scheduled without self-scheduling, with a preference for block scheduling that meets unit needs.
There are weekend and holiday requirements. Floating may be necessary based on unit census. Nurses must clock in and out.
Minimum of 2 years recent RN experience in a busy hospital environment required.
Certifications:
ACLS, BLS. Must-have:
Experience with post procedural cath lab patients, management of TR band compression devices, management of chest pain, experience with post cardiac surgical patients.
