Position: Academic Intern (Planning Division, Unpaid Internship)

Planning Division Academic Intern

Under general supervision, Academic Interns perform entry-level professional and administrative support work while gaining practical experience in local government operations. Interns assist with assigned projects, research, studies, analysis, community outreach, and departmental initiatives developed by City departments or directed by the City Council.

Academic Intern assignments are designed to provide students with meaningful learning opportunities that complement their academic coursework while providing exposure to public sector operations, professional practices, and career development.

This is an unpaid internship opportunity for eligible students who are completing an internship requirement for academic credit through an accredited college or university.

The Planning Division Academic Intern will work on the three following projects:

Accessory Dwelling Unit Program Outreach: Conduct outreach and provide education to homeowners, Homeowners' Associations, and contractors regarding Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) options, requirements, and resources.

Rent Payments Credit Reporting: Assist with outreach and education regarding new legislation requiring landlords of buildings with 15 or more units to offer tenants the option to have rent payments reported to credit reporting agencies when signing a lease and to existing tenants beginning January 1, 2025.

Small-Hooved Animals: Research regulations, zoning standards, and best practices related to the keeping of small-hooved animals. Upon completion of research, present findings and assist with obtaining policy feedback and direction from the City Council.

In addition to the project work described above, interns will receive general training and exposure to local government operations, including the planning process, development review, public engagement, interdepartmental coordination, and attendance at meetings as appropriate. The program is designed to provide a well-rounded educational experience and a practical understanding of municipal government.

Important Note: Participation in the City of Martinez Academic Internship Program requires a fully executed Academic Internship Agreement between the City and your college or university. Applicants must download the attached agreement, have the appropriate representative from their educational institution complete and sign the required sections, and submit the completed agreement by the deadline specified in the recruitment. Applicants whose educational institution does not complete and sign the agreement will not be eligible to participate in the internship program or move forward in the selection process.
