Fire Chief

Job Summary
The Marathon Martinez Renewable Fuels Facility located in Martinez, CA is seeking an experienced Fire Chief to support the development, maintenance, and execution of facility emergency response plans and programs. The position offers 9/80 or 5/40 schedules; after‑hours calls are required once a week (handled over the phone) and support of TAR once a year. Core business hours are 7 AM–3:30 PM.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the development, maintenance, and execution of facility emergency response plans and programs.

  • Develop facility fire and emergency response programs and provide direct leadership of the fire brigade during incidents.

  • Oversee facility emergency response equipment and maintenance in compliance with regulations and MPC's mechanical integrity programs.

  • Build and maintain working relationships with regulatory agencies and local mutual aid partners.

  • Develop and maintain facility fire prevention and response programs and conduct exercises to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines.

  • Develop and maintain an emergency response team training program that ensures competence as defined under the National Fire Protection Association.

  • Provide subject‑matter expertise in Fire Safety, Emergency Response, and Preparedness for the facility.

  • Education, Experience and Skills

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Must have a High School diploma or GED with a minimum of 7 years relevant experience such as fire brigade, or a Bachelor's degree in HES, Emergency Response, or another related degree with a minimum of 4 years relevant experience such as fire brigade.

    • Detailed knowledge and experience implementing the Incident Command System and ability to train, serve and advise multiple positions within the Command System.

    • Experience with facilitation or support of exercise design and execution at Tier 1 and Tier 2 levels of IMT management.

    • Experience with Emergency Preparedness compliance tasks management for multiple regional Federal and State agencies.

    • Ability to lead basic emergency response initiatives.

    • Experience with FEMA Incident Command System 400.

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

    • Ability to wear appropriate PPE (respirator) in the refinery and physically perform all field tasks; must pass a hair drug test and physical exam.

    • Valid driver’s license (MPC determines valid status).

    • Ability to obtain a TWIC Card.

    • Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for future visa sponsorship.

    • Travel requirement is 5% or less.

    Relocation may be available. Candidates must either live within or be able to relocate within 50 miles from the Martinez Renewable Facility.
