Field Technician / Erosion and Sedimentation Inspector
Description:
POSITION SUMMARY This position involves performing field inspections on active construction and land-disturbing projects to ensure compliance with Georgia and South Carolina erosion, sedimentation, and stormwater regulations. Work includes E&S inspections, environmental monitoring, GPS locating/mapping, and utility locating. The position requires frequent interaction with contractors, developers, engineers, and project managers to communicate compliance requirements and field findings. Work is primarily performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and active construction environments.
Duties require the use of personal protective equipment and the ability to perform physically demanding field tasks.
- Conduct inspections of land-disturbing activities, including clearing, grading, and BMP installation and maintenance.
- Evaluate compliance with approved Erosion, Sedimentation & Pollution Control (ESPC) Plans and SWPPPs.
- Perform inspections under Georgia NPDES Construction General Permit (CGP) and Industrial General Permit (IGP).
- Apply Georgia Manual for Erosion and Sediment Control (Green Book) requirements.
- Perform inspections under South Carolina EPSC standards and SCDES stormwater regulations.
- Complete inspection reports, photo documentation, and daily field logs.
- Perform turbidity sampling and basic environmental monitoring as required.
- Collect field data using GPS/GNSS equipment and assist with mapping and utility locating.
- Communicate deficiencies and corrective actions to contractors and project managers.
- Maintain accurate records and support stormwater and E&S compliance efforts.
- Perform other related field duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, maps, and specifications.
- Working knowledge of erosion and sediment control BMPs.
- Ability to apply Federal, State, and local stormwater and land-disturbance regulations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and professionally in the field.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- GSWCC Level 1A Certification required or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- SCDES Certified Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control Inspector (CEPSCI) required or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- Experience in construction, engineering, environmental compliance, or inspections preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and traverse uneven, undeveloped terrain on active construction sites.
- Ability to work outdoors, lift up to 50 lbs., and perform physical field activities.
